“Well my name’s John Lee Pettimore
Same as my daddy and his daddy before
You hardly ever saw Grandaddy down here
He only came to town about twice a year
He’d buy a hundred pounds of yeast and some copper line
Everybody knew that he made moonshine
Now the revenue man wanted Grandaddy bad
He headed up the holler with everything he had
It’s before my time but I’ve been told
He never came back from Copperhead Road”
-Steve Earle, Copperhead Road

Seems some are still breaking the “illicit distiller” laws in Tennessee and selling “White Lightning”:

* Wilbert Austin, 64, 5523 Highway 54 W. in Brownsville, pleaded guilty to possessing more than 3 gallons of untaxed alcoholic beverages. He reportedly had about 34 gallons of moonshine in his vehicle in June. His two-year sentence was suspended and he was placed on probation. He was ordered to forfeit all of the alcohol.

Moonshiner Wilbert Austin hales from Brownsville, TN, the site of Tanya Tucker’s song, Delta Dawn:

“She’s forty-one and her daddy still calls her “baby”
All the folks around Brownsville say she’s crazy
‘Cause she walks around town with a suitcase in her hand
Looking for a mysterious dark-haired man”
