Forty years ago can seem like light years in cultural terms. Forty years ago, the story of a Vermont lesbian who wanted to take a child away from her biological mother–because the mother was a Christian–would have been unbelievable. Janet Jenkins, part of a now-sundered lesbian twosome, has alleged that because of Lisa Miller’s (the biological mother) Christian parenting practices, Miller is no longer is a fit mother. Jenkins is seeking full custody of the child. Miller and Jenkins were a couple before Miller left the relationship and became a Christian. Now, the Virginia Supreme Court has to rule if 6-year-old Isabella, Miller’s child, is to be ripped away from her and custody given to Jenkins. Mathew Staver, chief of Liberty Counsel, said the impact of the decision will reach far beyond the important determination of the future for the child in question, also impacting states’ sovereignty and the values on which Christian parents make decisions. Staver said that the wrong ruling could set Isabella up to be “paraded as a political trophy of the homosexual community in Vermont”. “This case is exceptionally important because the future of [the child] Isabella hangs in the balance,” he said. “Her future will [...]

by Mondoreb The following tale might be the ultimate modern American story. It has a couple of victims, a villain, something little, something big and a lawsuit. The only question is: which is which? Or is there no victim? We submit it now for your edification. From Steve Patterson of The Chicago Sun-Times The note affixed to the office door handle of a Columbia College (Chicago) professor was short, simple and to the point.”Jack sucks donkey c—.” Reid Hyams is suing Columbia College to get his job back. He was fired for putting a Post-It note on colleague Jack Alexander’s office door that read, “Jack sucks donkey c—.” It wasn’t a student prank. It was, school officials contend, the workings of another professor who was embroiled in a dispute with his colleague. But after Reid Hyams was fired for placing the note on Jack Alexander’s door, Hyams filed suit against Columbia, alleging the school wrongly fired him for what he calls “an impromptu joke.” Besides, Hyams said, the note he wrote had said “Jack sucks donkey d—” and that’s just an industry slang term for a type of electro-voice microphone. “Somebody intentionally changed the term from one that has an [...]

There’s a reason or two 165,000 children are home-schooled in California. The homeschooling movement got blindsided by a ruling from a California appeals court that restricts homeschooling by parents without teaching credentials.k The ruling was a shock to the movement and leaves an estimated 166,000 children as possible truants and their parents at risk of prosecution. It also demonstrates the lengths government will go to protect its monopoly on education. The homeschooling movement was shocked–to put it mildly. “At first, there was a sense of, ‘No way,’ ” said homeschool parent Loren Mavromati, a resident of Redondo Beach (Los Angeles County) who is active with a homeschool association. “Then there was a little bit of fear. I think it has moved now into indignation.” A dispute between the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services–doesn’t that have a nice “I’m from the government and I’m here to help you”ring to it?–and Phillip and Mary Long of Lynwood, who have eight children they have been homeschooling. Mary Long is their teacher, but holds no teaching credentials. The parents said they also enrolled their children in Sunland Christian School, a private religious academy in Sylmar (Los Angeles County), which considers [...]

It’s a defense even OJ’s crack legal team hadn’t thought of. An actress in Tokyo, Serena Kozakura, had a conviction for willful destruction of property overturned by the Tokyo High Court because of her large breasts. Heaving a sigh of relief, Kozakura was visably pleased when the court ruled that her large breasts cast doubt and revealed flaws in the testimony against her. “I lost work after being charged, but justice prevailed in the end,” she said at a news conference she held in Tokyo after the conviction was overturned. Reconstruction during an appeal hearing of the 38-year-old actress’s alleged crime of breaking down the door in a man’s apartment showed her breasts prevented her from climbing through a door as the man testified she had done, casting doubt on his reliability. The high court overturned a district court ruling that found Kozakura guilty of willful destruction of property and sentenced her to 14 months in jail, though the sentence was suspended for three years. Kozakura was pleased. “I was always worried about being a bit fat, but this time I was glad.” She had been charged with having kicked down the door of a man’s apartment after she had [...]

Essent is deeply committed to its hospitals, its communities and its people and is focused on long-term, disciplined, and intelligent growth. Essent will make acquisitions only when the strongest opportunities present themselves; the number of hospitals in the company’s portfolio will not be the measure of our success. In a case that pits David the Anonymous Blogger versus Essent the Goliath Healthcare Corporation, a Texas state appeals court ruled an anonymous blogger’s identity does not have to be revealed. The-Paris-site This is not an anti-Essent blog, it is to counter their current business model. That which values the individual staff member or patient less than the buck. Business sense is one thing, creating an atmosphere of Stalinist Russia is another. The ruling overturned the original verdict in the case of Essent Healthcare Inc. of Nashville, Tn, against the blog, The Paris Site. An extremely important ruling, the first of its kind in the state of Texas, it affects the First Amendment rights of bloggers or Free Speech on the Internet. The appeals court overturned the original ruling of Judge Scott McDowell which required the Internet Service Provider Suddenlink Communications to reveal the identity of the owner of The Paris Site.
