Sometimes, a story takes curious turns in the telling. “I’ve got a right to be wrong” –English singer-songwriter Joss Stone Freedom means free to be wrong. So turns the story of Sahara the Arctic Seal. The seal has twice been rescued in warmer waters far from home. Once in 2006 off the coast of North Africa: hence, his name. After being nursed back to health in Britain (no word if his health care was provided by the government), Sahara was set free, only to paddle in the completely wrong direction a second time. Animal rights activists then battled to give Sahara one more chance to avoid a life in captivity. Five month ago: “We’re disappointed that he headed south and not back up north,” said Tamara Cooper, an animal care supervisor at the National Seal Sanctuary in southern England. “But we’re relieved that he’s safe and well.” Sahara’s fate remains unknown, but his story gives the opportunity to mention that being free means having the right to be wrong: the freedom to fail. It also gives another opportunity: the opportunity to present a ridiculous 30-second Japanese video. It may or may not pertain to this subject. Readers can decide for [...]

Is there no justice? The wheels of justice grind slowly, but somewhere in Minnesota, a pig sitter still is free. Back in November 2007, a a pet pig, whose weight had tripled under the care of pig sitter, Mary Beesecker, was placed on a diet and Beesecker charged with an animal cruelty violation. Try as we could, and with the resources of the Internet at our fingertips, no news of whether Besecker ever faced Minnesota justice in this tale of porky porker woe. The 5-year-old animal, Alaina Templeton, part potbellied pig, has lost 10 percent of her 150 pounds and is recovering well from surgery to remove a collar that had become embedded in her overly fat neck, owner Michelle Schmitz said. The sitter was apparently neglecting Alaina and let the pig roam outdoors, free to chomp on cat food and chicken feed at the co-worker’s farm. Alaina had made headlines the week before the animal cruelty charges, after Schmitz complained that the pet sitter had allowed Alaina to go from her normal 50 pounds to 150 pounds in just nine months. Schmitz had left Alaina with the sitter, a co-worker, while she was on medical leave to recover from [...]

The author of this is unknown to me but what a neat story. Thank God there are still people in this world that would take the time to do something like this. This is one of the kindest things I’ve ever experienced. I have no way to know who sent it, but there is a beautiful soul working in the dead letter office of the US postal service. Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words: Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see [...]

Too many rules. That’s probably what one man thought who was hoping to cheer up a sick relative at a Hawaii hospital thought. Too many rules. One of Wilcox Memorial Hospital’s visitation rules: No horses allowed. The man thought the patient would enjoy seeing his stallion, said Lani Yukimura, a spokeswoman at the hospital. He and the horse entered the hospital earlier this month and rode an elevator up to the third floor, where they were met and stopped by security personnel, Security managed to get the man and the horse out of the hospital, with “just a few scuff marks,” she said. If the man had brought a pet, say a cat or dog, it would have been allowed. It’s not known why horses weren’t included into the visitation mix. “On Kauai, we have a very warm inviting atmosphere at Wilcox,” Yukimura said. “We just hope people understand this is not a place for a horse.” The man’s good intentions were further dashed when his relative was brought out to see the horse. “That’s not my horse,” the patient said to hospital staff. Okay, so maybe it’s not such a bad rule to disallow horses from the hospital visiting [...]

This is strange and it really IS amazing!! I got this from a friend of mine in California that used to live in the same little town in Northern Michigan (Marenisco) as I did. I’m not sure where he got it from but he sent it to me a while back and then I got it again today from one of my cousins in Chicago . When I left Marenisco about 35 years ago, the DNR was just then introducing moose into the area. Never thought they’d take up there but apparently they did! When I saw these pics, I was amazed as I know exactly where they were taken. We used to hunt that area all the time. Used to be some prime deer and bear hunting there. The “highway” (we called it a road) that’s mentioned is M-64 that runs between Presque Isle Wisconsin and Marenisco Michigan. The following text isn’t mine and I have no idea who shot the pics or wrote the text. Not one, but two ! Truly amazing ! These animals were photographed just north of the Wisconsin border on a highway near Marenisco , MI . Once in awhile there is an opportunity [...]

Some people have no sense of fashion–or awareness–or humor–or whatever. A Boulder salon owner is facing a $1000 fine for dyeing her poodle pink. Joy Douglas appeared before a Boulder Municipal Court judge and asked for a continuance because she now has an attorney. Her case has be reset for April 7. Douglas, owner of Zing Hair Salon, received a $1,000 ticket from an animal-control officer for coloring her white poodle, Cici, pink by using organic beet juice. “We do it to promote awareness of breast cancer,” said Douglas, 30, who has owned the large hair salon for three years. “Cici is a conversation piece. Customers come in and ask why the dog is pink. So we tell them about breast-cancer awareness, about the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, and then we ask for a donation.” Of course, some people have no sense of fashion, humor, whatever you call it. Some people were upset at a pink poodle. A few customers called the Humane Society of Boulder Valley, whose commissioned officers enforce the city’s animal ordinances. One ordinance prohibits the coloring or dyeing of animals, a law that went into effect about five years ago to discourage families [...]
