In 2003, the U.S. invaded Iraq. Five years later, President Bush strongly signaled Wednesday that he won’t order troop withdrawals beyond what’s already been planned. The president refuses to “jeopardize the hard-fought gains” of the past year. As anti-war activists demonstrated around downtown Washington, the president spoke at the Pentagon to mark the anniversary of a war that has cost nearly 4,000 U.S. lives and roughly $500 billion. The president’s address was part of a series of events the White House planned around the anniversary and next month’s report from the top U.S. figures in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker. That report will be the basis for Bush’s first troop-level decision in seven months. “The battle in Iraq has been longer and harder and more costly than we anticipated,” Bush said. But, he added, before an audience of Pentagon brass, soldiers and diplomats: “The battle in Iraq is noble, it is necessary, and it is just. And with your courage, the battle in Iraq will end in victory.”` Congressional Democrats lost no time in calling for surrender. “With the war in Iraq entering its sixth year, Americans are rightly concerned about how much longer our nation must [...]

What Good is Health Care if You’re Dead? Red Planet Cartoons, one of the finest purveyors of right cartoons, is spot on with their latest offering, “Priorities”. They start out with a quote from Sen. Lindsay Graham: WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) today made this statement on comments by Senators Hillary Clinton (D-New York) and Barack Obama (D-Illinois). “Senator Clinton made an interesting statement last night. She said, “We’re ready to end the war in Iraq and win the war in Afghanistan.” No one doubts we must win in Afghanistan, the country that gave rise to the Taliban and Al Qaeda. But Senator Clinton’s Iraq statement about “ending” the Iraq war was quite troubling. “Troubling” is Senator-speak for “Are you kidding me?” RPC adds to the mix with a post from Little Green Footballs, “Islamic States Seek World Freedom Curbs“–just for emphasis–and winds up with “Steve King is Right…Al-Qaeda Will Celebrate If Obama Wins– Like They Did Last Time“. Included is this King quote: “Islamists “will be dancing in the streets” if Obama is elected president.” A thorough look at how the rest of the world sees our presidential elections and the non-serious posturing of a couple [...]

Red Planet Cartoons has excellent commentary on the big picture concerning the sealing of the U.S. southern border, “National Security at the Border“. We couldn’t agree more. Opponents of increased security, a border fence and a crack-down on those who sneak across the border miss this point entirely. Their arguments fall into two categories: “it won’t work” and “you’re a racist”. Neither is particularly convincing–outside of the cocktail parties attended by border security opponents. Red Planet Cartoons starts out with a reprise of Robert Spencer’s National Security at the Border: Three Afghanis were arrested Wednesday at an international airport in India’s Kerala state for flying with forged Mexican passports… The warnings have been coming in for years. In June 2004, border patrol agents arrested 77 “Middle Eastern” men attempting to enter the U.S. illegally. As usual, Red Planet provides a Spencer video and more links to relevant information on this highly important–and one hopes, not highly-explosive–subject. By chance, DBKP did two border security stories this week: “Illegal Immigration, The Big Lie: Eisenhower Stopped Border Crossings COLD” and “FISA Battle Continues While Southern Border Remains Open“. The latter was written almost at the same time as the Red Planet Cartoon above. [...]

“Revenge is a dish best served cold” And so, it will be history that best judges the actions of President George W. Bush. Not the Democratic poodles who’ve been yapping and nipping at his ankles for the last four years. Like poodles, the Reids, Pelosis and Murthas are all bark and little bite. And when confronted, they quickly retreat behind a curtain of aides a-spinning,”clarifications”, and angry denials. This started as an excuse to use the neat RAPH graphic above. But it’s also a chance to use this piece, which was sent by ornery elephant. It is by an anonymous author and was circulated by emails the last few weeks and comes via Gunslinger’s Journal, a brassy cat-loving chick with a collection of big guns. “If Bush resigned today, this is what his speech would be….. Normally, I start these things out by saying “My Fellow Americans.” Not doing it this time. If the polls are any indication, I don’t know who more than half of you are anymore. I do know something terrible has happened, and that you’re really not fellow Americans any longer. I’ll cut right to the chase here: I quit. Now before anyone gets all in [...]

On January 31, the Berkeley California City Council drew a literal line in the sand against the Marines and its recruiting station located in the city and, much to their chagrin, the largess of the Federal Government. Not satisfied with merely voicing their opposition with the war on terror and Iraq, the city council took several steps, steps which invoked using the powers of the city council to harass the Marines into packing up their recruiting station and getting “off of town.” The City Council voted to officially sanction the anti-war group Codepink, giving the group a free city parking space in front of the Recruiting Station and a sound permit to protest. They voted to “explore” enforcing its law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation against the Marines because of the military’s, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, and they also voted 6-3 to warn the Marine recruiting station to get out of town, they were not wanted in Berkeley, that the Marines were now considered “uninvited and unwelcome intruders.” Hey-hey, ho-ho, the Marines in Berkeley have got to go. That’s the message from the Berkeley City Council, which voted 6-3 Tuesday night to tell the U.S. Marines [...]

The Associated Press is reporting that one of their own, photographer Bilal Hussein, who has been in U.S. custody since April, 2006, is being turned over to the Iraqi courts. NEW YORK – The U.S. military says it will turn over an award-winning Associated Press photographer to an Iraqi court, accusing him of having links to terrorist groups. The military is refusing to disclose what evidence or accusations would be presented, and an AP attorney on Monday strongly protested the decision, calling the U.S. military plans a “sham of due process.” The journalist, Bilal Hussein, has already been imprisoned without charges for more than 19 months. Source – Associated Press There’s the story of Bilal Hussein’s plight and another story, one of American news organization’s defense of using “locals” such as Bilal Hussein to “report” the news during a war which involves the United States. Bilal Hussein, award-winning photographer for the Associated Press, native of Fallujah, Iraq, has highlighted the controversy of using persons who may or may not be sympathetic to the United States military’s actions in Iraq. Who may or may not be part of the “insurgency” whom the United States is currently fighting. The jury’s still out [...]

by Mondoreb & Little Baby Ginn In the aftermath of Blackwater, non-lethal crowd control is an issue that commanders in Iraq very much have on their minds. They may soon have a new weapon to use as early as next year. It’s not a science fiction weapon, but one that’s been in the making for the last decade. There’s been some buzz over the last year or so about the deployment of the new weapon with a military-sounding name, the Active Denial System. It may be ready as soon as next year for use in Iraq. More from the Houston Chronicle: There’s no doubt this oversized ray gun can deliver the heat. The question is, how soon can the weapon, which neither kills nor maims, be delivered to Iraq? At a rain-soaked demonstration of the crowd-dispersal tool here Thursday, military officials said one could be deployed early next year. But others still need to be built and undergo more testing before being shipped, a slow-going process at odds with urgent demands from U.S. commanders for the device. What the troops may see as needless delays, Pentagon officials view as necessary steps toward fielding a weapon never used before in combat. [...]
