Red Planet Cartoons commemorated the annual feeding of the federal Leviathan: April 15th, Tax Day. The above cartoon kicks off an informative post about The Fair Tax. “[P]assing the FairTax would constitute the biggest transfer of power from government to the people in the history of this republic.” -–from the book FairTax: The Truth: Answering the Critics by congressman John Linder and Neal Boortz, p.60. For those who need information on the Fair Tax idea, RPC presents the following, easy-to-digest table. The FairTax Act (HR 25, S 1025) is nonpartisan legislation. It abolishes all federal personal and corporate income taxes, gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, and self-employment taxes and replaces them with one simple, visible, federal retail sales tax administered primarily by existing state sales tax authorities… The FairTax: * Enables workers to keep their entire paychecks * Enables retirees to keep their entire pensions * Refunds in advance the tax on purchases of basic necessities * Allows American products to compete fairly * Brings transparency and accountability to tax policy * Ensures Social Security and Medicare funding * Closes all loopholes and brings fairness to taxation * Abolishes the IRS For more: About the Fair [...]

“Nothing is easier, or more emotionally satisfying, than blaming high prices on those who charge them, rather than on those who cause them.” -–Thomas Sowell Pull up a chair, class is about to begin. The subject: Failed Democrat Party Economic Theories 101 The instructor: Red Planet Cartoons In “Rocket Scientists They’re Not“, RPC lets the facts speak for themselves. The House approved $18 billion in new taxes on the largest oil companies Wednesday [Feb. 27] as Democrats cited record oil prices and rising gasoline costs in a time of economic troubles. As detailed in last week’s DBKP post, “Democrats Pass Largest Tax Hike in History“, Democrats–and some Republicans–think you can tax a country into prosperity. Red Planet demonstrates the sheer asininity of this idea by providing plenty of info. One has to wonder: if taxing the oil companies an extra $18 billion is such a good idea, why not tax them twice that? Or three times the amount? Of course, upon hearing these suggestions, there are readers on the Left who would smack the side of their heads and yell, “Brilliant!” There will never be a lack of reasons for taking other people’s property or money via the power of [...]

Politicians will try anything, but they have yet to repeal the laws of supply and demand. That, in the nutshell, is the cause of rising gasoline prices. That doesn’t mean they’ll not try to distract taxpayers by pointing fingers at Big Oil. Red Planet Cartoons provided a much-needed public service several days ago by reposting the above cartoon from 2007, “Dissecting Gas Prices”. Along with the great graphic, RPC also provides a little info for the economically-challenged. Corporate profits receive a lot of media attention, but what receives considerably less attention are the corporate taxes paid on corporate profits. Do a Google search for “Exxon profits” and you’ll get about 8,000 hits. Now try “Exxon taxes” and you’ll get a little more than 300 hits. That’s a ratio of about 33 to 1. I’m pretty sure that Exxon’s tax payment in 2007 of $30 billion (that’s $30,000,000,000) is a record, exceeding the $28 billion it paid last year. It goes on to say that “Exxon alone paid more taxes than the bottom 50% of U.S. taxpayers”–that’s 65,000,000 million taxpayers. Will the Democrats in the House pass a resolution praising Exxon and it’s shareholders for their great contributions to the U.S. [...]

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) recently sent out an email which highlights one area where the difference between Republicans and Democrats still remains stark: raising taxes. Congressman Cantor: Before adjourning for recess, House Democrats passed the largest tax-hike in American history; a rate hike that will soak an average of $3,120 from every family. In an economy reeling from a slowing housing and job market, this is a burden that American families and small business owners simply cannot afford. Let’s be clear – this Democrat tax hike raises the tax burden of every American, particularly the middle-class. Their budget, which they voted to pass this week, includes the following tax assumptions: * Raises the current “10 percent tax bracket” to 15 percent. This would increase the burden on all American taxpayers, especially the lowest income earners. * Implements an across-the-board increase on marginal income tax rates. * Reinstates the marriage penalty. Approximately 23 million married couples would be affected. * Slashes the $1,000 per-child tax credit in half. * Increases the tax on dividends, which often supplement the income of senior citizens relying on Social Security. * Reinstates the death tax, which is considered the largest impediment to transferring family-owned businesses [...]

Coming to a Gas Pump Near You? Rep. John Dingell (D-oofus) has proposed a 50-cent tax on every gallon of gasoline to try to slow down American’s gas consumption. We don’t know if a half-buck tax per gallon will cut back on American’s gas consumption, but it will cut back on American’s desire to vote Democrat come November. The Michigan congressman’s proposal comes as a reminder that most Democrat–and some Republican–members of Congress never met a tax they didn’t like. Some polls declare that a majority of Americans support policies that would reduce greenhouse gases–although with the record snow falls this past winter some Americans could’ve done with a few more greenhouse gases–when it comes to paying for those policies, there’s a different story to be told. Dingells’ tax proposal will just make it harder for most Americans to make ends meet. If Dingell had paid attention in Econ 101, he would have learned that some products, for which there is no good substitutes, are known as inelastic. That is, they don’t respond to price increases like other products. Gasoline consumption is, for most people, an inelastic product. The majority of their gasoline consumption is for work and essential motoring. [...]

We got this (like a lot of “funny but true” stuff we get) in an email. So we thought we’d pass it along. The email’s author seems to get pretty worked up by the end! The next time you hear a politician use the word ‘billion’ in a casual manner, think about whether you want the ‘politicians’ spending YOUR tax money. A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases. * * * * * A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959. B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive. C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age. D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet. E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it. While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let’s take a look at New Orleans It’s amazing what you can learn with some simple division . . Louisiana Democratic Senator, Mary Landrieu , is presently asking the Congress for $250 BILLION to rebuild [...]
