Birmingham Alabama Tornado: Video, Ten January F4 Tornadoes in US since 1959

At approximately 4 am, CST, January 23, 2012, a ‘suspected’ tornado struck the Center Point area in Birmingham, Alabama. Based on the damage from the storm–video posted below–it was a tornado. We’ll have to wait to hear from the US Meteorological Society and NOAA to get the official ruling on the tornado’s rank on the Enhanced Fujita-Scale for Tornado Damage.

Are strong January tornadoes rare in the United States?
According to the website TornadoChaser.net, there’s been ten F4 tornadoes reported in the United States in the month of January since 1959 and 45 F3 tornadoes.
