Beijing’s local government has issued a new policy that people must register before buying any knife from a supermarket, according to the Legal Evening News. Foreign stores such as Walmart and Carrefour also much follow the new guidelines.
Children, people with behavioral disorders or documented mental health issues will not be allowed to purchase knives, and the store must inform the police if someone falling into any of these categories attempts to buy a knife.
In 2009 some Beijing retailers stopped selling knifes after two high-profile knife attacks in what seems to be the same ‘area’ in Tiananmen Square. The attacks carried out just prior to China’s 60th Communist take-over anniversary-video posted below. In August of 2008, another high-profile knife attack just prior to the 2008 Olympics. The victims, relatives of the coach of the United States Olympic Men’s Volleyball team. The “assailant jumped to his death shortly after the attack”-video news report posted below.
