Steve Jobs is no longer with the living. According to Da Tool Guy, Jobs was a Titan among entrepreneurs and America might never see his like again. RIP.

CONSERVATISM 101:
#47 – Steve Jobs and entrepreneurialism

Darkside Dave found himself, along with a lot of us, in mourning this week, as the sad news that Apple Computer Co-Founder Steve Jobs was dead at 56 came through.

This had been expected for a while as Jobs was, well the best description is, “skeletal” at his last public appearance.

It’s a sad moment for the nation and the world as someone who was, in my mind, the last of the Titans is dead.

I say that in all seriousness. Whatever his personal politics, and they were apparently fairly liberal, Jobs was the last of the Corporate Titans.

He was also all that American industry at its best can be.

Jobs came from a hard-scrabble background where his parents spent their entire life savings to send him to a college he then dropped out of.

Probably the best thing he ever did. He and Apple Co-founder Steve “Woz” Wozniak went on to create what is now the most profitable computer and consumer electronics firm in the world.

Jobs, who was a demanding and occasionally tyrannical taskmaster within Apple was also apparently a very nice man — albeit not without his failings — outside it.

He paid attention to every detail of every product Apple put out, down to the packaging. Everything had to meet his relentless drive for perfection.

In the process, contrary to what liberals who believe nothing is accomplished outside of a collective, this one man’s vision changed the world not once, but multiple times.

Did he create the first graphical user interface? No, but he was the first to truly see the potential and bring it to market. Now we can’t even imagine a computer without it.

Did he create the mp3 player? No, there were mp3 players before the iPod, but they were mostly for geeky types with acne and thick glasses. No, Jobs just managed to make them easily used and ubiquitous. There were smartphones before the iPhone, but how many people outside of business or celebrities had them? Now if you don’t have one, you want one, and even the regular phones are beginning to look like smartphones. Like your Android phone? It would not exist, but for Steve Jobs.

We all look forward to the cool ads on Superbowl Sunday. Yup, Steve Jobs again, and the first Macintosh ad in 1984.

He was living proof of something we’ve all forgotten — one sufficiently visionary person can change the world for good or ill.
Is he up there with Thomas Edison, Henry Ford or Andrew Carnegie as some have suggested?

Possibly.

They were all corporate titans who changed the world through hard work and vision.

We may never see their like again, alas.

RIP Steve.
