Japan’s Nuclear Reactors Disaster: Beck, Coulter, Clueless About Chernobyl Radiation Effects
FOX News Shepard Smith: Americans 'stupid' for buying potassium iodide tablets
For $29.99 you can purchase of bottle of 90 tablets of Nuke Protect, a product which contains natural-source iodine from Northern Pacific wild kelp, as well as 110% of the recommended intake of natural-source selenium. Less than 30 bucks for radiation exposure ‘piece of mind’.
This past week has been and continues to be catastrophic to Japan, the devastating 9.0 earthquake and tsunami and the record number of strong earthquakes that continue to shake Japan and the already rattled nerves of citizens dealing with the aftermath. The death toll is expected to climb to over 20,000, similar to the 1896 Meiji-Sanriku earthquake and tsunami which hit the same region in Japan. What no one has written about, why did the Japanese government allow the Tokyo Electric Power Company to construct the Fukushima Power Plant near the area devastated by the 1896 quake and tsunami? While the 1896 earthquake was a 7.2, the estimated wave height of the tsunami was an astounding 125 ft.. The death toll, over 22,000. In 2007 the Tokyo Electric Power company was forced to shut down the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant after the Niigata-Chuetsu-Oki Earthquake. By 2009, after seismic upgrades, TEPCO restarted nuclear reactors 1, 5, 6, and 7. During a recent news report TEPCO claimed the Fukushima Plant was built to withstand a 7.2 quake and a 30 ft. tsunami. TEPCO said the the chain of events leading to damage to the nuclear reactors and radiation exposure were caused by the tsunami from the 9.0 earthquake tsunami–30 ft.– which destroyed the power plant’s electrical grid.
Today, FOX News reported EPA: No Health Risk From Radiation Heading to California:
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Nuclear Regulatory Committee (NRC) said although radioactive isotopes from the crippled Japanese nuclear power plant will be blowing toward California as soon as Friday, the agencies are confident there is no need to worry about any health risks, the Los Angeles Times reported.
According to experts, only very small amounts of radiation will make their way in the winds of the Pacific Ocean over to the West Coast of North America — about 5,000 miles from Japan.
Sounds great! No need to worry. And yet, the EPA and experts are relying on information related to a nuclear disaster which is still rapidly unfolding. We’ve yet to hear the official ‘all clear’, no further radiation will be released into the atmosphere.

Nuclear Power Plants in the US – INSCDB
In the past few days we’ve seen FOX News commentator Glenn Beck try to downplay the current nuclear reactor crisis and radiation exposure in Japan including Beck’s idiotic Chernobyl-M&M Candy analogy. FOX News commentator ‘Shep’ Smith, reporting from Tokyo, was perplexed as to why Americans were ‘frenzy’ buying Potassium iodide. Smith, on air, called these Americans, ‘Stupid’. Conservative political pundit Ann Coulter wrote the astoundingly clueless piece, A Glowing Report on Radiation, with Coulter making the same argument as Beck about Chernobyl.
Coulter:
Amazingly, even the Soviet-engineered disaster at Chernobyl in 1986 can be directly blamed for the deaths of no more than the 31 people inside the plant who died in the explosion. Although news reports generally claimed a few thousand people died as a result of Chernobyl — far fewer than the tens of thousands initially predicted — that hasn’t been confirmed by studies.
Were Coulter and Beck referring to direct radiation exposure sickness, which, most likely has already claimed several victims, the brave Japanese workers who have been battling the damaged reactors? According to news reports, the Tokyo Electric Power Company had called in their oldest workers, workers close to retirement, the ‘old’ guys whose life spans were already limited.
Today the New York Times published Chernobyl’s Lessons for Japan, a report which highlighted the dangers of radiation exposure, and, the aftermath of Chernobyl, a far grimmer picture than Beck and Coulter’s rosy radiation exposure picture.
Thirteen years after the Chernobyl disaster, the incidence of pediatric thyroid cancer was 52 times the region’s pre-1986 level. In Belarus, where the fallout blew, it was 113 times higher. In the immediate area surrounding Chernobyl, the incidence of pediatric and adult thyroid cancer remains the highest found anywhere in the world — more than 500 times the pre-1986 levels for the region.
The rate of thyroid diseases, including non-cancer conditions such as Graves and Hashimoto’s dysfunctions, is also extraordinary. Fourteen years after the accident, thyroid diseases of various kinds were diagnosed in Ukrainians at a rate of about one per 3,000 local residents annually.
Watching Beck, Smith, and reading Coulter one might conclude at least two of the three are shills for the nuclear energy companies with one–Smith–a clueless reporter.
In regards to Americans buying up potassium iodide, why not? Why not be ‘safe’ instead of ‘sorry’? A bottle of potassium iodide sitting on the shelf, which may never be used, will also be a ‘stress reliever’. The relief of not having to wait in line or kick yourself for not being prepared. Prepared for protecting yourself and your children.

A better remedy to your “safe than sorry” is “educate yourself” which Beck and Coulter documented for their readers which you did not. Your suggestion on fosters ignorance rather encouraging people to educate themselves. Shepherd is caught up in the newsreel hype which always accompanies these ‘breaking news alerts’ especially from the ‘front lines’ where rumors and ‘announcements’ build upon a reporter’s personal bias and ignorance. If people educated themselves about nuclear power plant design, a little history and some basic radiation science, they would surmise stateside Americans eating a banana would register more radioactive exposure than any ‘particles’ from Japan.

The pharmacists, and doctor that I have spoken to advised me that I SHOULD have the iodine tablets in the medicine cabinet in case they are needed but they ALL advised me NOT to take them until a threat was clear and imminent!
To know whether or not we should start taking them, FIRST we need to know what is going on out there with the radiation levels. From what we have seen from the media, especially the Japanese media, WE ARE ON OUR OWN to know what those levels are and where!
I’ve found a place, the ONLY place I have found, where you can watch and or monitor for OURSELVES, the levels from different areas of the globe, streaming in real time.
For those who are interested in watching or checking the levels for themselves rather than waiting on a government who may or just may NOT tell you, the page is at budurl.com/geiger
