I cross-checked the Sol 2169 pictures and the related ones and it appears that what appears to be the “sky” in 2169 is actually the underside of a solar panel or similar overhanging structure. The “alien” structures in question are attached to the underside of this part. Below this is the actual sky, as a light, even grey color, then below that is the actual horizon marked by rocky terrain. If you really pay attention, you can even see the reflection of the wheel on the right bottom of the picture in the top right, like it is reflecting off of something metallic facing downward. This also correlates with the shadow of the wheel on the ground.
Sorry guys, there’s nothing here. When we find out we’re not alone, I have a feeling it will be a little more dramatic than a blurry photo like this.
Yup
I really must agree with the tattered sun catcher idea. It’s a matter of perspective. It’s like looking at the underside edge of an umbrella or lightening rod… whatever strikes your fancy… ehhhh
What is that structure? Anyone?

Hi, I think this is nothing, if you go to the nasa site, and check the Opportunity
link: http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/opportunity.html
and select Sol 2169 (REAR)

You get this, and images like these.
You see these ‘structures’ are part of the machine that makes the pictures.. I don’t think it’s a big deal.. I could be wrong though..
