Oaxaca Mexico: Up to a Thousand Feared Trapped in Deadly Mudslide in Santa Maria Tlahuitoltepec
Tropical depression located near Cuba expected to become tropical storm headed NNE, away from southern Mexico

According to recent news reports bad weather and roads damaged by earlier mudslides are keeping emergency rescue teams from reaching the residents of Santa Maria Tlahuitoltepec in the Mexico state of Oaxaca trapped in an early morning mudslide. The mudslide caused by heavy rains from Hurricane Karl which passed through southern Mexico last week followed by Tropical Storm Matthew, downgraded to a tropical depression which dumped more rain on an already saturated southern Mexico. Estimates by the Governor of Oaxaca of up to a thousand people in the town of Santa Maria Tlahuitoltepec trapped by a mudslide which occurred around 4 AM. According to the current weather forecast for Oaxaca, a 30% chance of rain today, a 20% chance of rain tonight, followed by two days of overcast conditions. Friday and Saturday, a 20% chance of rain. According to the National Hurricane Service, tropical depression #16 located 160 miles south of Cuba is predicted to strengthen into Tropical Storm Nicole, the storm currently heading NNE. The tropical storm’s predicted path, away from the already devastated by heavy rainfall southern part of Mexico and the efforts to rescue the estimated 500-1000 people trapped in the Oaxaca area mudslide.
According to the AP, the mudslide ‘dragged’ the houses 1300 ft. down a hillside, the houses completely covered by the mudslide. A hundred people confirmed missing with the Governor of Oaxaca stating from ’500-1000′ people could be trapped in the tons of mud and debris. The report of another hillside in danger of collapsing in another area where 9,000 people live.
According to ENS Newswire, Governor Ruiz stated emergency teams hampered by bad weather have been unable to reach Santa Maria Tlahuitoltepec which is located 4 hours by road from Oaxaca. The roads already affected by several small landslides which occurred earlier in the week due to heavy rain. The cause of the mudslide, heavy rains from Hurricane Karl and tropical depression Matthew.
Most recently, Tropical Storm Matthew struck eastern Nicaragua Friday pounding the area with torrential rain and powerful winds. On Friday, Nicaragua evacuated some 10,000 people from Cabo Gracias a Dios and the Miskito Cays.
On the weekend Matthew moved northwestward, pounding Belize and Guatemala with major flooding, deadly landslides and strong gusty winds.
By Sunday, Matthew was a tropical depression unleashing flooding rainfall over southern Mexico.
Many areas across the states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, and southern Veracruz reported three to six inches of rain Sunday.
According to Weather Underground, the five-day forecast for Oaxaca: Today, a 30% chance of rain, with a 20% change of rain tonight. Partly cloudy, Wednesday and Thursday with a 20% chance of rain predicted for Friday and Saturday.
According to the National Hurricane Center, tropical depression #16 located about 160 miles south of Havana, Cuba, is expected to increase to a tropical storm, dubbed Tropical Storm Nicole. The tropical depression currently moving NNE at 10 mph.
