Update: September 9, 8:06 PM EST, Boulder Wildfire: City of Boulder Preparing For Worse Case Scenario After Red Flag Warning
As someone who has been a long-time resident of western Colorado during the devastating drought who has had to evacuate due to a nearby fast moving wildfire, sheriff deputies warned us we had 10 minutes to collect what we could and get out of the area. Ten minutes to gather up our horses, pets, and belongings. According to 9 News, an evacuation centers have been set up at the North Boulder Recreation Center, the Nederland Community Center, and the Boulder County Fairgrounds for “large animals”.
On July 6, 1994, the Western Slope suffered a devastating wildfire which took the lives of 12 Bureau of Land Management elite firefighters. The fire, dubbed the South Canyon Fire Disaster, began three days earlier at the base of Storm King Mountain in South Canyon located near Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
On the afternoon of July 6, the South Canyon fire spotted back across the drain and beneath the firefighters, moving onto steep slopes and into dense, highly flammable Gambel oak. Within seconds, a wall of flame raced up the hill toward the firefighters on the west flank fireline.
Failing to outrun the flames, 12 firefighters perished. Two helitack crew members on top of the ridge also died when they tried to outrun the fire to the northwest. The remaining 35 firefighters survived by escaping out the east drainage or by seeking a safety area and deploying their fire shelters.

BTW why does no one know that there is a town between boulder and nederland, with roughly 100ish or so people who live and/or work up there, most of them are losing their homes and businesses, some of which have been there and in service since the 1800′s, to include the last operational 1 room school house in the country!!!

Thanks for the info. As a resident over on the western slope, I’m not familiar with the Four Mile Canyon area or how many residents live there.
