Eddie Bernice Johnson: None Were More Worthy Than My Relatives
Texas Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D) violated rules, steered scholarships to relatives
Rep Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) steered scholarship money to relatives and others who were not qualified to receive the awards. Another story from the most ethical Congress ever.
ANOTHER STORY FROM THE MOST ETHICAL CONGRESS EVER
Texas Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D) violated rules, steered scholarships to relatives
Well, in fairness, this has been going on since 2005 so it will be glossed over and attributed to being “taken out of context”. After all, it was 5 whole years ago, why make a big deal out of it now? An honest mistake. Wasn’t her fault. Was going to read the rules but misplaced that darned rulebook the day she was going to read it. Had to have been that white assistant trying to make her look bad. Besides, this is just another example of racist, radical right wingers on a witch hunt for black democrat legislators.
She admits that she did this “unknowingly”. Initially, she said, “I recognized the names when I saw them. And I knew that they had a need just like any other kid that would apply for one.” Had there been more “very worthy applicants in my district,” she added, “then I probably wouldn’t have given it” to the relatives. Next stop, cabinet position.
Johnson initially denied any favoritism but later acknowledged that she “wasn’t fully aware of the program rules” set forth by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, a program to distribute scholarships to students that must have a 2.5-grade-point average, but no explicit judging criteria.
If so, then what criteria denotes a “very worthy applicant” of which, according to Rep. Johnson, there was a shortage. Can we assume that as long as the student has at least a 2.5 GPA, is living in the same district as the representative and is white, that that student would also be eligible?
From Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson violated rules, steered scholarships to relatives
Longtime Dallas congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson has awarded thousands of dollars in college scholarships to four relatives and a top aide’s two children since 2005, using foundation funds set aside for black lawmakers’ causes.
The recipients were ineligible under anti-nepotism rules of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, which provided the money. And all of the awards violated a foundation requirement that scholarship winners live or study in a caucus member’s district.
Johnson, a Democrat, denied any favoritism when asked about the scholarships last week.
A couple of questions.
1. Why is a person that “wasn’t fully aware of the rules” of a program that distributes money, much of it from private donations, allowed to administer those funds? The Congressional Black Caucus apparently didn’t properly vet this person.
2. Were there indeed no white “very worthy applicants?
I’m sure we can all expect to see this on the dominant, liberal mass media outlets for the next week. Right?
Ok, maybe not.
Well, at least until Al Sharpton and/or Jesse Jackson decide that this is just another example of racism.

Talk about the lamest excuses ever. In total, she awarded 15 scholarships since 2005 to her grandsons and great-nephews and to children of an aide.
Kudos to the Dallas Morning News for their intrepid work in uncovering this. Now, if all of the big city dailies would do more than act as mouthpieces for their favored political hacks, we’d be on our way back…

She won’t even get her hand slapped. Her relatives must be going to college to learn to be community organizers. That makes them worthy applicants.

It is very unfortunate that nothing is going to be done regarding the consequences that should be taken when someone false to protect the money of our kids. Had it been a white, hispanic and or any other origin we would have already rendered a guilty verdict. We CAN NOT be blinded by such corruption and “look the other way” regardless of who it is. What it is…is what it is. Our black community was quick to rush to conclusion that it was a mistake and poor judgment used however not too long ago we heard of a hispanic law enforcement officer being suspended from work for making a judgment call regarding funeral safety and tons of black elected officials calling for him to be fired due to his decision. The bottom line is this, it is not about racism, it is about the fact that we should be treating everyone with the same respect and the same rights that everyone deserves. We should not have two set of rights and apply certain rights to certain people. We are in America where everyone born under this flag should be TREAT as equal including those that break the law such as giving her family and friends the sole opportunities of scholarship funds when it was intended for EVERYONE that qualifies. I can assure you that there are tons of white, hispanic, etc origins that would EASY have met, and possibly gone over the 2.5 GPA required scale. The fact that you have someone like Eddie Bernice Johnson that is ONLY giving these funds to family members is outrageous and criminal. I have lost alot of respect for her and regret ever voting for her in my lifetime.
