REPORTS: Texas Ranches Seized by Mexican Drug Cartel; Violence Spills over Southern Border-UPDATE
Mexican Drug Violence Overspills into Texas
Los Zetas, the Mexican cartel execution arm that is battling a Mexican drug cartel for control of Nuevo Laredo, seized two ranches near Laredo TX. Reports are sketchy but continuing. News of a blackout is also making an appearance in several reports.
UPDATE: We’ve talked to Laredo PD. Full report of what was discussed will be up in minutes.

UPDATE #2-3 at end of post. UPDATE #4 at end. #5 up at 1045 EDT.
NOTE: DBKP is working on a longer more comprehensive post on this story. Check back within the next 90 minutes. We’re waiting to hear from 2 additional independent sources.

REPORTS: TEXAS RANCHES SEIZED
BORDER PATROL, LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT HUDDLING
NEWS BLACKOUT CONTINUES ON SOUTHERN BORDER
Mexican drug cartels have seized several ranches on the Texas side of the U.S.-Mexican border outside of Laredo, according to multiple reports. One report says that the families have been evacuated and that law enforcement is now attempting to figure out what to do.
In addition, reports of a “news blackout” on the events have been received.
This might be an inconvenient time for the Obama administration for news of continued violence on the southern border spilling into the U.S.
From BREAKING: Multiple Ranches In Laredo, TX Taken Over By Los Zetas [Update 2]:
The bloodbath continues along our southern border and now word is coming in that Los Zetas, the highly trained killers formerly with the Gulf Cartel, have crossed into the United States and taken over at least two ranches in the Laredo, Texas area. I am receiving word that the owners of the ranches have evacuated without being harmed. The source is law enforcement in the area.
(Update 2 story is now 100% confirmed by second source within the Laredo Police Department)
Founder of the San Diego Minutemen Jeff Schwilk tipped me off to this story and passes along the following information on the location. The ranches are said to be “near Mines Rd. and Minerales Annex Rd about 10 miles NW of I-35″.
Update 1 (Statement from Mr. Schwilk)
I can personally vouch that this info came in late last night from a reliable police source inside the Laredo PD. There is currently a standoff between the unknown size Zeta forces and U.S. Border Patrol and local law enforcement on two ranches on our side of the Rio Grande. The source tells us he considers this an “act of war” and that the military is needed on the border now!
IN addition, Pat Dollard.com had an article which was up and quickly taken down.
http://patdollard.com/2010/07/breaking-urgent-multiple-ranches-in-laredo-texas-taken-over-by-mexican-insurgents/
Screenshot below.
Texas citizens calling 9-11 and reporting explosions have also been reported.
DBKP is working on a more comprehensive report at this time; check back in the next 90 minutes for more news of the Texas ranches seized and what one anonymous Laredo PD person called “an act of war.”
UPDATE #2: Our longer piece will posted within minutes.
From Pat Dollard’s Twitter: Kimberly Dvorak, who wrote an info-filled piece at the Examiner, confirmed her 3 off-the-record sources inside law enforcement and says “she is standing by her story.”
More Dollard on Twitter:
FBI has issued an advisory: Zetas have seized a ranch to train its members to “neutralize” competitors in the United States. Developing…
RE: Laredo: I just spoke to Kimberly Dvorak who has been a source on ACORN stories for Breitbart, and wrote this article: http://is.gd/dEVcy
Kimberly is adamantly standing by her story, and gave me the name of one of her three sources inside the PD/Sherrif’s Dept., two of whom…
..she says not only confirmed the story of the ranches being seized, but elaborated in great detail what was happening. She also has other
sources on the ground, non-law enforcement. She is mid-stream in developing and further reporting the whole story, and she has
# reason to believe that law enforcement is in mid-operation on the ranches, and do not want their operation interrupted with publicity before (23 minutes ago via web)
Oh and does anyone think this headline [Senate rejects border funding; U.S. Rep Giffords is outraged] has any effect on this story?
Arizona’s congressional delegation is batting .000 in efforts to obtain more funding for border security. The latest setback prompted blistering criticism from U.S. Rep Gabrielle Giffords.
On Thursday night the U.S. Senate approved a war funding bill setting aside nearly $60 billion in funds for President Obama’s troop surge in Afghanistan. But it stripped out nearly $20 billion in domestic spending that had been added by the House. $700 million of that money would have paid for additional Border Patrol agents, surveillance technology and assistance to local law enforcement agencies.
Texas Border City on Lockdown. Fox News reporting Nuevo Laredo is on Lockdown.
Los Zetas vs. Gulf cartel and both against the Mexican military.
Pat Dollard’s updated story is back up: Breaking, Urgent: INSURGENTS SEIZE TWO RANCHES IN LAREDO, TEXAS
In what could be deemed an act of war against the sovereign borders of the United States, Mexican drug cartels have seized control of at least two American ranches inside the U.S. territory near Laredo, Texas.
Two sources inside the Laredo Police Department confirmed the incident is unfolding and they would continue to coordinate with U.S. Border Patrol today. “We consider this an act of war,” said one police officer on the ground near the scene. There is a news blackout of this incident at this time and the sources inside Laredo PD spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Word broke late last night that Laredo police have requested help from the federal government regarding the incursion by the Los Zetas. It appears that the ranch owners have escaped without incident but their ranches remain in the hands of the blood thirsty cartels.
Dollard’s assessment of the story: “The hostile takeover of the ranches has met with silence with local and national media; however sources say they could be waiting to report the stories once the ranches are back in U.S. control. This journalist questions if this was a Middle Eastern terrorist attack if the media would sit on their hands.”

Why The Los Zetas Ranch Story Matters – Confirmation And Why A Media Blackout?
BREAKING
I am receiving many messages of concern that they don’t believe that the story of the Los Zetas seizing multiple ranches in Laredo, Texas is true. They keep questioning the confirmation. They question why there are no visuals or pictures. “Where is the video!” they scream. So I will address those issues in this post.
First, let me clarify that I was also skeptical of the story when I initially heard word. It is certainly not because there haven’t been armed intrusions into the United States before from Mexico. There have been a ton in the last decade, but there have not been any where they would hold onto a position. They usually leave after a standoff or upon discovery.
The situation has become different in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico over the last few days. There have been gun-battles through the streets and fragmentation grenades used as the government of Mexico tries to run the Los Zetas out of their stronghold there. People died and were wounded. The city was on lockdown and the US government issued warnings to US citizens in the area to remain indoors. With our lack of border security and porous borders, it is not beneath my intellect to believe that the Los Zetas could be forced into a retreat into US territory and attempt to seize a hideout.
MORE on the background to the original story that got the ball rolling at Digger’s Realm. (Link to whole post–it’s not only interesting, but reads like the evolution of a story–posted above.)
Not only that, but “first contact” with me of the initial story was from none other than Jeff Schwilk, founder of the San Diego Minutemen, who had a confirmed source in the area of Laredo. With this in mind I decided to go with the story, but to remain cautious. I clearly stated on the story that it was not 100% confirmed. It remained that way all night.
I put out my feelers throughout the night to try and collect information and other credible sources to confirm the occupation of ranches in Laredo. I did not receive actual confirmation until this morning when I got word that Kimberly Dvorak of the Examiner had made multiple confirmations within the Laredo Police Department. Up until this point the story had not spread wide. There was no reason for the Laredo Police Department to crack down hard and keep things truly blacked out as there was no heavy interest from media.
Jawa Report also has mentioned this.
NOTE: We’ve made mention of a Fox News story in the comments to this post. Correction: the story we were referring was published by the Houston Chronicle. Sorry for any inconvenience.
UPDATE: Laredo Times, Officials know nothing of rumored Zeta standoff on Mines Road:
At about 4:30 p.m., Maru De La Paz, spokeswoman for Webb County Sheriff’s Office, wrote that the report about Zetas taking over ranches in Laredo is not confirmed.
No denials in the entire LT story. Lots of carefully-parsed “don’t knows” and “can’t confirm.”
Which is to be expected.
UPDATE: At approximately 9:20 EDT, we talked to the reporter at the Laredo Times, Nick Georgiou, who wrote the story posted in our last update. He indicated that he was not done with the story.
We asked him if he had had physically visited the site. He told us that he hadn’t but was going to drive out to see for himself if anything was happening at the two ranches in question. We are to talk to him when he gets back, when he will also update his story at the Laredo Times.
We’re still waiting to hear back from him at 10:45.
UPDATE #6: Last update.
Michelle Malkin has the above round-up.
We don’t know at this moment if this is true. We can only report on what others whom we trust have reported. We talked to the reporter at the Laredo Times who wrote the local story. He was originally going to do an update, but The Laredo Times will not update their article tonight.
We will have an early story up on what is known at about 7 AM EDT. We have a lot of ears to the ground. No one with knowledge of the story is denying it at this point in time. That may come later, but right now, that’s not happening.

Folks, be VERY careful in re-posting this story, NONE of the news services have it, no other source in Texas has it besides The Cypress News…
I called the Laredo Police and they said they have NO information and referred me to the Webb County Sheriffs Office, I called the Webb County S.O. and got NO answer…
I am NOT going to post this on MY blog, simply because one paper doesn’t give enough citation of source… Especially when the paper says the Laredo PD is their source and the Laredo PD denies it…

TexasFred,
Thanks a million for the caution.
We have 2 individual reports and one conversation with the Laredo PD that indicates that something is going on–and that whatever it is, no one is talking on the record about it.
Thanks again!

Fiftyeast,
I stand by everything I report.
Laredo PD’s jurisdiction doesn’t extend to site of incident. Doesn’t mean that they aren’t informed of what’s going on in near-by locales. We’ve developed additional sources in the Laredo area since this was posted. The truth will come out.
Sometimes it takes longer than you may be willing to give it. That’s okay, we’ll wait.
In the meantime, you join all the rest of the commenters who’ve demanded info on your timetable. We amend our stories later to reflect any new information.
Here’s a good bet: you won’t be back to amend your comment. Which is why put our name on the story while you hurl “fraud” from the anonymous ‘Fiftyeast.’
Thanks for stopping by.

Looks like it has and you were wrong. You put your name on a story that was patently ridiculous, I do not have a blog so I can post under any NDP that I wish.
Regardless you are creating a smokescreen to take away the fact you were duped, If you believed that hogwash about a Mexican Invasion you would believe anything.
Theres about 6 pages refuting your stellar reporting and yet you publish no names?
Better stick with the day job fella!

Every time the MSM reports a news story using an unnamed source or an anonymous source do you 1), Demand they name their source?, and 2) Do you have a clue as to how many MSM news reports contain quotes from unnamed sources?

usually when ANY media cites unnamed sources it bears a deeper look into instead of sticking by a story that in fact you don’t have the faintest idea whether it is true or not.

YOU do not have the faintest idea of whether or not I have the faintest idea of whether the story is true or not.
You are throwing around accusations behind a NDP. Easy to do. We’ve been there, done that. We listened to your ilk during the Edwards scandal.
You haven’t the faintest of who our sources are, what they’ve said, what we can say now, what we can say later. We’re looking into it deeper.
Our story was a crime story, not some “Mexican Invasion” story. If it had been a Mexican Invastion story, it would have been front and center along the top of the story In 72-point type.
Not buried in the comments made by some anonymous poster, carping from 1700 miles away.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.

To the reporters – 1) If you’re reporting a breaking story, great, but don’t interject personal opinions about political issues.
2) If the report will be updated in half an hour, say that you expect to update the report by 6:00 Mountain time. Telling readers that it will be updated in 90 minutes tells them absolutely nothing because they have no idea when you wrote that.

Officials know nothing of rumored Zeta standoff on Mines Road
By Nick Georgiou
Laredo Morning Times
Published: Saturday, July 24, 2010 5:38 PM CDT
Local law enforcement was bombarded with calls from across the country Saturday asking about a report that the Zetas had taken over two ranches off Mines Road.
But officials with the Laredo Police Department, Webb County Sheriff’s Department and Border Patrol said they knew nothing about such an incident, while Erik Vasys, an FBI spokesman in San Antonio, said the agency does not comment on rumors.
The report, which spread like wildfire among blogs Saturday afternoon, appears to have initially been posted on a blog called Diggers Realm.
The blogger wrote that he got a tip from a San Diego, Calif., minuteman named Jeff Schwilk, who said that the Zetas, former enforcers of the Gulf Cartel, had crossed into the United States and taken over two ranches off Mines Road, about 10 miles northwest of Interstate 35.
Quoting Schwilk, the blogger wrote that there was a standoff between “the unknown size Zeta forces and the U.S. Border Patrol and local law enforcement on two ranches …”
The blogger wrote that the story was confirmed by anonymous sources at LPD.
But Investigator Jose E. Baeza, LPD spokesman, said he had not heard anything about the incident. Also, an LPD sergeant, who was on duty as a watch commander Saturday afternoon, said she had not heard anything about it either.
At about 4:30 p.m., Maru De La Paz, spokeswoman for Webb County Sheriff’s Office, wrote that the report about Zetas taking over ranches in Laredo is not confirmed.

Well, we have received some very interesting updates over the weekend. I would hope that some of the information is able to be posted before week’s end.
I hate “sitting on info,” but sometimes the greater good has to be considered. Just exactly what that “greater good” actually is can certainly be debated, but putting off the updates for several days won’t affect anything other than our desire to present the entire story of what happened right now.
You’re welcome, btw. Even though you don’t agree with our position, your comments add to the discussion. If everyone agreed, it would be very dull around here, I’m afraid!
