Mexican Drug Cartel Seizes Two Texas Ranches: 2005 Department of Justice Intelligence Bulletin Warned Local Authorities in CA, AZ about Los Zetas Drug Cartel

Report in 2008 confirms Mexican drug cartels operating military-style training camps "a few miles" from South Texas border

There’s a story unfolding in South Texas involving local authorities who refuse or deny two South Texas ranches were taken over last night by a Mexican drug cartel, the Los Zetas, with the ranchers “escaping without incident”. That there could be, currently underway, an operation involving local authorities and federal authorities involving the two ranches which includes a media blackout of the news. Which, based on earlier incidents involving the border related to Mexican military helicopters sighted near Laredo, doesn’t surprise us. Since filing our latest post we’ve discovered that, in 2005, the Department of Intelligence sent out an “Intelligence Bulletin” warning local authorities to be on the look out for the very dangerous Los Zetas drug cartel, the same cartel which is allegedly involved in the purported hostile takeover of two South Texas ranches. In 2008, the Dallas Morning News reported Mexican cartels were operating military-type training camps located “just across the border” in an area near where the two ranches are located.

We discovered a news reported which we’ve had to do some research to discover when it was originally reported. Based on research the news report was published in 2005 from KOLD News 13. KOLD reported they’d discovered a Department of Justice Intelligence Bulletin which warned local authorities in California and Arizona to be on the alert for members of the Los Zetas drug cartel.

KOLD News 13:

The U.S. Justice Department is warning local police in Arizona and California a group of rogue Mexican military commandos may be headed this way. They’re thought to be setting up new drug smuggling routes and it could bring new violence to the border area.

And,

The Intelligence Bulletin we obtained says the Zetas are responsible for hundreds of violent drug-related murders. It says they’ve executed journalists, murdered people in Dallas, McAllen and Laredo, Texas. They even detained two DEA agents and recently they’ve shot at Border Patrol agents. At the Arizona border with Mexico agents are already seeing a major increase in violence.

On March 30, 2008, the Dallas Morning News reported Mexican drug cartels were operating six military-style training camps in at least six known locations, some “within a few miles of the Texas border”, including locations in the northern part of the Mexican states of Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon.

The location where the two Texas ranches were purportedly seized by the Los Zetas Mexican drug cartel, “near Mines Rd. and Minerales Annex Rd about 10 miles NW of I-35″. A location close to the Mexican border in Webb County, Texas. Webb County, Texas is located directly across the border from northern Tamaulipas with the border of Nuevo Leon, in the near vicinity. The ranches in close to proximity to where the Dallas Morning News reported in 2008, Mexican cartels were running military-style training camps “within a few miles of the Texas border”.

Dallas Morning News:

“Traffickers go to great lengths to prepare themselves for battle,” said a senior U.S. anti-narcotics official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Part of that preparation is live firing ranges and combat training courses. … And that’s not something that we have seen before.”

Many of the camps are temporary, used for a time and then abandoned or used intermittently. Others are hidden on private land behind locked gates and have more permanent facilities, the officials said.

The land is seldom held in the name of known cartel members but is usually purchased through someone fronting for a cartel, authorities said. Sometimes “mobile” training camps are conducted on private land without the owner’s consent.
