Lost Finale: Spoilers, Inane Questions Such as Why Didn’t Hurley Lose Weight?

Were LOST fans held captive by ABC producers?

Hurley

Everyone’s writing about tonight’s series finale of Lost , the spoilers–there are none, while the producers are being intentionally vague-and the questions, I’ve got a few of my own, and the “thoughts” of Lost fans who may or may not riot in the streets if the producers fail to deliver in the Lost series finale.

What time will the Lost Finale air: ABC at 9PM EST with a 2 hour retrospective beginning at 7 PM EST. Time to catch up LOST episodes, a refresher course leading up to the hopefully this explains why we spent our time watch LOST episodes for six seasons.

There are only a few more hours until the 2 1/2 hour season finale is upon us. I really hope I am not writing an article in the morning about my disappointment. I have invested six years, 121 hours of my life to this show, and they had better deliver.

Here’s my rather inane questions about Lost and the series finale:

1. Why didn’t Hurley lose weight?

A hundred and twenty one episodes on a deserted island and Hurley looks to be the same weight range as when the series began. Hurley and the other passengers of the plane crash–in the pilot–48 passengers survived the crash–discover food rations in the Hatch, the 1970s scientific Dharma Initiative research station which implodes in the second season finale. Hurley spent a vast amount of time “running” through the hot, humid jungle in several dozen episodes, escaping from, or tracking down “bad guys”. Hurley, whose diet consisted of the limited Dharma Initiative Rations, fish, and coconuts should resulted in Hurley losing some of his weight.

2. Why did Hurley’s clothing always look “new”?

For a guy who’s been living a jungle deserted island existence, the final season of Lost, Hurley’s clothing appears to be fairly new, in one episode you could see where his t-shirt still had a crease, contrasted with Kate and the other survivor’s “disheveled” clothing.

3. Why did Jack and Sawyer’s hair always look as if they’ve been to a salon?

In the finale season of LOST both Jack and Sawyer’s hair didn’t reflect two men stuck for an extended period of time on a deserted island. Both Jack and Sawyer had “stylish” cuts up to and during the final series of episodes. Jack’s hair remained “short” while Sawyer retained his trademark sexy medium length mane.

4. Why hadn’t the gasoline evaporated in Hurley’s beat up, decrepit VW Bus?

In the “Magic Bus” episode, Hurley discovers a decrepit VW bus which Hurley manages to start then drive. Depending on the circumstances, where the gas is stored, contamination from bacteria or water condensation, temperature and high humidity, the shelf-life of gasoline can be up to “two years”. For more info see Why does gasoline go stale so quickly?.

5. Why wasn’t the beer Hurley found in the back of the bus, stale?

The Washington Post reviewer who watched the episode had this observation:

How bad must that beer have been? The Dharma Initiative brew discovered in the back of that bus has to be a level below Miller Lite on a good day. The fact that it’s been keeping a corpse company for God knows how long means it must be skunkier than Pepe Le Pew. How could Sawyer possibly have consumed an entire six-pack of that swill?

6. Why, after being attacked, and in some cases killed, by a smoke monster, a polar bear, and other assorted “monsters” on the island, did the survivors, in later episodes, totally disregard the “danger”, go for walks through the jungle, set up of golf course, ect., ect.?

7. When locked up for the first time in the abandoned zoo cages, why didn’t Sawyer and Kate find a way to get out? The two could have dug their way under the bars, or, Kate could have stood on Sawyer’s broad shoulders. Rolled a couple of large rocks in the cage over to the bars, then stacked them up?

8. Why did the other 47 passengers elect Jack to be the leader, allowing themselves to be passive in the decisions made about how to survive and how to get rescued? Out of 48 survivors, there could have been, should have been, people who wouldn’t have been so easily persuaded to sit in the shadows of the palm trees, with killer “monsters”, some which originally sounded mechanical, lurking in the fringes of the jungle.

9. Will the Lost finale episode satisfy long time fans or lead to rioting in the streets?

The answer depends on several factors such as:

-The type of fan of LOST and how well the producers manage to tie together the numerous “loose” ends of the show.

If the producers fail to provide an ending which gives a satisfactory explanation to at least some of the main mysteries in the show, fans who’ve been watching the show as a “mystery” which will be eventually solved, will be sorely, and in some cases, bitterly disappointed, feeling they were “duped” by the producers.

For those who watched the show as a “weekly” dose of a well-filmed series about a mysterious adventure on a beautiful but deadly deserted tropical island-the series was filmed on Oahu, Hawaii, and, the romantic triangle between Jack, Kate, and Sawyer, the bittersweet relationship between Jin and Sun, the dynamic between the relationships, a failure by the producers to provide a logical explanation to the numerous mysteries won’t be as earth-shattering to the faithful “mystery” fans who’ve hung in there for almost six years and six seasons of LOST. Who, if the producers fail to produce a satisfactory finale of LOST, will feel as if they’ve lived part of past six years, 121 hours of their lives, being held captive by ABC producers.

They have provided at least some answers to question 1. Hurley mentioned once that he was losing weight, just that he was so large it wasn’t especially noticeable. He also was stashing and consuming all of Dharma’s ranch dressing for a while.

Check out the very first minute of the pilot. Look at the reflection in Jack’s eyes. You see the black smoke leaving him. Jack traveled through time. There’s a black rod next to him that used to control the black smoke. You’ll see Ben with it in later seasons.
