The National Enquirer has another bombshell: John Edwards has proposed to mistress, Rielle Hunter. Is this an attempt by Edwards to make Hunter an honest woman? Or is it an attempt to legally shut her up? Can anyone say “spousal immunity?”

John Edwards has proposed to his mistress Rielle Hunter, and is buying a luxury $3.5 million beachfront home where they can live happily ever after with their love child, The ENQUIRER has learned exclusively.
The disgraced presidential candidate popped the question at the same time he told Rielle that he’d be issuing a press statement finally confirming he fathered her daughter Frances Quinn, close sources told The ENQUIRER.

Sources say they expect to be officiallydivorced within a year, paving the way for the ex-senator to make Rielle, 45, his wife.
“John dropped the proposal bomb on Rielle shortly before he issued his statement” that he was indeed Frances’ father, a close source divulged.
“John knew Rielle had been waiting for a proposal for two long years. Since they’ve gotten involved, she’s followed every order he gave her, going on a cross-country cover-up, hiding away during her pregnancy and after giving birth for the sake of his presidential aspirations.
“Rielle never uttered a peep about their affair publicly, and remained loyal to John. John felt she deserved to know that he wanted to raise their child together, and wanted Rielle in his life as his partner.
“John has said that when his divorce is final, he’ll buy her a diamond ring. But in the meantime, he’s getting them a house.”
Another source told The ENQUIRER: “John has proposed to Rielle, and she said yes.”
One parting thought: this is only the latest proof that Edwards thinks that sometime in the future, his political career will rise from the ashes. He knows he’s dead politically if he’s indicted by a grand jury of campaign finance violations, convicted and does any jail time.
If, however, he escapes the long arm of the law, in John Edwards’ world, all he needs to do is lay low, do charitable photo ops and at some time in the future, offer himself as a candidate for further “public service”.
Of course, that’s a dream.
But first things first: John Edwards needs to beat the US Attorney in NC looking into the multiple cover-up charges. To do that, it appears he needs to legally shut up Rielle Hunter.
According to the National Enquirer, he’s taken the first step toward doing that.

Memo to political candidates: if you’ve got something to hide, don’t taunt the Enquirer. Gary Hart came to a bad end doing it. The only difference between Hart and Edwards? Hart’s demise was much quicker: he lived during a time when the Mainstream press wasn’t yet the mouthpiece for the DNC.

We report this latest bizarre “news” with a caveat: it comes from the Enquirer’s sister publication, The Star, which is a totally different animal in terms of believability from the National Enquirer.
The mother of John Edwards’ young child was cheating on him, Star has discovered. At the same time Rielle Hunter was sleeping with the South Carolina democrat she was also having an affair with Law & Order: Criminal Intent star Jeff Goldblum!
Jeff met Rielle in 2006 at the Playhouse West acting school and repertory theater in North Hollywood, where he teaches, we report in our Feb. 22 issue, on newsstands today.
“Jeff said he was in love,” a source tells Star. “They were extremely close — totally, 100 percent, a major item.”
When videographer Rielle got pregnant in 2007, Jeff naturally assumed the baby was his — and Rielle led him on. “He asked her,†says the source. “She would only say, ‘Maybe.’ She kept him guessing.”

Our comment: This might be the “tabloid trash” that John Edwards accused the National Enquirer of running in its stories. Or not, but it would seem that “according to a source” should carry a large BEWARE! sign on it.

UPDATE: Might John Edwards have been tipped off to a coming grand jury indictment? Is this responsible for the timing of this story? He does has contacts within the North Carolinian legal community. Might not one of those contacts know the status of a particular sitting grand jury?

UPDATE: Perez Hilton says that a rep from John Edwards says the reports of him marrying Rielle Hunter are “not true”. Recall Edwards’ answer to reports that he was having an affair were, “not true.”
Also recall that Edwards’ answer to reports that he was the father of Frances Quinn Hunter was “not true.”

A spokesperson for John Edwards is denying reports that the onetime senator has asked his former mistress, Rielle Hunter, to marry him.
“It’s absolutely not true,” says a spokesperson for Edwards, of a story in the National Enquirer that claims the two plan to wed after his divorce from Elizabeth Edwards is complete.
Remember when every claim from the National Enquirer about John Edwards had “alleged” put in front of it? That is, when the media did mention it?
Now, every claim by John Edwards should carry the “alleged” tag. Wouldn’t matter. The ex-senator and presidential candidate is lower on the believability scale than Nigerian emails desperately searching for a reader to share in their millions.
Readers are free to discuss the validity of John Edwards’ latest (alleged) answer.

That’s one way of putting it.
Another way would be: Edwards had an affair while running for president on a morals and family values platform, using his family and marriage to demonstrate his character. When caught, he repeatedly lied about it–and continued to lie after there was little reason to.
In addition, he continued to take millions of dollars in donations under false pretenses: no doubt some of his donors would not have donated money to a candidate who could have been blown out of the election, had he been nominated and his antics been made public. Some donors have said as much.
There are thousands of people who have affairs. We don’t write about most of them. We wrote about Edwards, not because he simply had an affair; we wrote about him because it presented potential voters with a narrative which directly contradicted the one from the Edwards campaign of a dedicated husband and family man.
“Disgrace” is probably one of the more benign ways to describe his actions.
