I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children. I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I’ve done, but I want to do my best to try.

I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding. What’s most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing.

After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.

Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period.

IS TAKING AN INDEFINITE BREAK FROM PROFESSIONAL GOLF A GOOD IDEA?

This break from the pro tour is exactly what the doctor ordered. It is not likely that Tiger Woods would have relished answering questions from the press and now he doesn’t have to.

He can duck out of sight and let “Team Tiger” do all of the repair work. Expect to see sympathetic sports writers–and other writers–be fed stories about “Tiger as a victim”. Victim of what?

Who cares? Victim of sexual addiction, victim of his own appetites, of a racist society, of tabloids who covered Tiger’s fall from grace. Never mind that the only person responsible for Tiger Woods’ fall was–Tiger Woods.

One prominent commentator already jumped on that bandwagon before the ink was hardly dry on Woods’ statement.

National Public Radio’s Juan Williams, speaking on Fox News Special Report said that he thought Tiger Woods taking time off was a “bad idea”. Williams called the women who’ve come forward “parasites” and gave the impression that the analyst thought that the women raped Tiger Woods. Williams, though pressed for time, never commented on Woods’ culpability in the matter.

IN a politicized age, look for a woman’s group somewhere to now call Tiger Woods a “sexual parasite”.

Back in the day, guys who provided money and favors to women for sex? We called them “johns”.

But, the real news: Tiger Woods is taking an indefinite break from professional golf–and no one but Tiger knows how long that break will be.
