But what is perhaps less obvious is that communism did not just vanish in a puff of historical smoke. The Soviet Union was defeated and fell apart, for sure. But the communist ideology that fueled it did not so much disintegrate as reconstitute itself into another, even more deadly form as the active enemy of western freedom.

Soviet Communism was a belief system whose goal was to overturn the structures of society through the control of economic and political life. This mutated into a post-communist ideology of the Left, whose no-less ambitious aim was to overturn western society through a subversive transformation of its culture.

“…transformation…” There’s that word again.

But as communism slowly crumbled, those on the far-Left who remained hostile towards western civilisation found another way to realise their goal of bringing it down. This was what might be called ‘cultural Marxism’. It was based on the understanding that what holds a society together are the pillars of its culture: the structures and institutions of education, family, law, media and religion. Transform the principles that these embody and you can thus destroy the society they have shaped.

Education, family, law, media and religion? The Left controls education, law and most of the media. Family and religion? Ask yourself: why those two institutions are under 24/7 attacks by “progressives”?

Every time “progressives” cheer a law as “historic” or “landmark”, it does one of three things: 1-strips power away from the family to control their children; 2-strips power away from religion to teach their adherents; and/or, 3-increases the size and power of government, the better to continue the attacks on 1- and 2- from a much improved position.

There’s been much speculation as to why Barack Obama has pushed his Leftist agenda so fast and furiously in his first nine months in office. It’s been marked down as a “campaign mode vs. governing mode” problem. Just change a few overzealous advisers and why–Barack Obama will be the Lincoln he has claimed to be.

WHY PROGRESSIVES’ SPECIAL HATRED for LIMBAUGH and BECK?

Why the Obama bum’s rush?

One reason is that the Left in America rarely gets their hands on all of the levers of power at once. There’s something about the Left’s agenda that creeps out the average American–when they’re aware of it.

One example: the push to deconstruct the family using the education system. The BHO hmmm hmmm hmmms are merely the latest indoctrination of which parents probably weren’t aware.

Who does the Left attack most vehemently? Those who expose the radical Left and their Progressive agenda. Recently, the two most notable have been Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck.

Without Limbaugh’s daily wake-up calls and Beck’s exposure of Marxist-admiring Anita Dunn and Communist Czar Van Jones, Progressives would quietly go about their business of “transforming” the country one regulation at a time.

“Transformation” is a task more easily accomplished through stealth–except when it’s in the form of Pelosi Care and bulldozed through the House for all to see.

20% of America self-identifies as “liberal”. An even smaller percentage self-identifies as “progressive”.

For the sake of self-preservation in the USSR, 100% of the ruling elite were “progressive”.

Somewhere between that <20% and 100%, progressives and their agenda are stopped--or there's no stopping them.

Short of the counter-revolution.

NOTE: Readers may wonder, “where do libertarians fit into all of this?”
Most Libertarians, by nature, exhibit a hands-off attitude when dealing with both the Right and the Left.

Of late, Libertarians have been concerned about the constant attacks on free speech and the Internet which have begun to be noticed in the last few months. That’s encouraging, but Libertarians won’t join in earnest until things have reached a tipping point. That point may have already arrived in Virginia and New Jersey where Independents deserted the Dems by wide margins. How many of those Independents were Libertarians? There’s been little reporting on that aspect of the 2009 elections thus far.
