Racism Charges and Obama Health Care Opponents: Do the Math
THE SPECTER of SELF-HATING RACISTS
Who Voted for Obama and now oppose his policies
Raises its ugly, far-right wing head
“These people who voted for Obama and 11 months later oppose his health care policies are nothing more than self-hating racists.”
–DBKP’s LBG on charges that opposition to Obama Care is motivated mainly by race.

[ABOVE: The crack journalists of the Mouthpiece Media, aided by the intrepid Jimmy Carter, uncover another meeting of opponents of government-run health care. Click image to enlarge.]
Did you hear the one about the uber-liberal president–who happens to be black–and the redneck band of KKK members who are trying to snuff out the glories of his presidency? It goes something like this:
“You oppose Obama’s policies? That’s racist!”
There are a few problems with the “Obama-Care-Opponents-R-Racists” meme being floated in the media lately. [Jimmy Carter: The “overwhelming†portion of animosity towards Obama is racist; More "Racism Tuesday" UPDATED; 'Take Back America' Is Now a Racist Phrase].
DO THE MATH
According to Wikipedia, Barack Obama received 52.9% of the popular vote in the 2008 election.
According to which poll you read, somewhere between 47 and 53% of voting adults oppose Obama’s health care reforms.
So, at least some of the people opposing health care reform voted for Barack Obama for president. My question then to Jimmy Carter, the NYTimes, MSNBC and others of their ilk:
“If these same people are racists now, weren’t they racist 10 months ago when they voted for Obama? Why wasn’t this story covered? Why didn’t you report that there were racists voting for Obama in 2008?”
As DBKP’s LBG speculates, “These people who voted for Obama and oppose his policies out of racism today are nothing more than self-hating racists.”

Is “self-hating racist” a condition that will be covered in any of the versions of government health reform circulating in the House and Senate?
We hope so.
In the meantime, it is hard to see how such people can live with themselves.

Come on, you can use logic better than that.
Carter didn’t say that EVERY person who opposes Obama on health care is racist. He said some. And I’m sure that those are also people who didn’t vote for Obama for office.
To actually believe that none of the people who are opposing Obama are racist is just silly.

Jonathan,
To actually believe that none of the people who are opposing Obama are racist is just silly.
Agreed.
Although it could be argued from the links you supply, that many of the pix, while guilty of poor taste are not racist.
But then, we would have to get into the other side of that coin: that there are some people who support Obama based solely on his race. And what would that add to the discussion? Not a thing, so why bring it up?
As you said, it would be “silly”.
To believe that the majority that oppose him do it on the basis of race is not only silly, it’s mathematically impossible–unless those people who overlap the two groups (the people who voted for Obama, the people who oppose Obama Care) are “self-hating racists”.
Of course this discusion is somewhat silly. Which is the whole point of the article…and a bit of the comment.
Actually, I wasn’t the one who started this discussion, I’m just participating in it.
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to add to the discussion.
