Memories of other past “pledges”
The Salt Lake Tribune reported that an elementary school principal in Farmington, Utah, recently apologized to parents after inadvertently showing a Barack Obama “I Pledge” video to the kids at an assembly.
School Principal Ofelia Wade claimed the video was chosen by the PTA to be viewed as part of the school’s year theme of “service” and that it was during the screening that she realized the school “shouldn’t have shown it”. If you haven’t yet seen the video, we’ve got it, and it’s pretty apparent after watching it that it’s not quite appropriate for young kids.
Huffington Post highlighted the video on Jan. 19, 2009. Huffpo reported the “celebrity packed” video was slated to be presented to Obama during his inauguration ceremonies. The video was directed and edited by Demi Moore. The video was originally called “The Presidential Pledge”. Somewhere along the line the name changed to “I Pledge”.
The video was produced by MySpace’s “MySpace Celebrity” and Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg’s Katalyst Films, located in Los Angeles. It’s obvious that the 4 minute film is aimed at an older audience. We’re not sure just how it wound up in the hands of the Farmington, Utah, PTA.
Presidential “Pledges” from Celebrities:
-”I pledge to reduce my use of plastic by starting with using less bottled water.” And,
-”I pledge to work to make good, the two hundred year old promise to end slavery.”
-”To the abolition of 21st century slavery.”
-”To free one million people from slavery in the next five years.”
That bit about the “two hundred year old promise to end slavery” referred to the British Slave Trade Act of 1807.
Here’s more of the “pledges” made by celebrities in the video then screened to elementary kids in Utah as young as first grade:
“I promise to make sure that senior citizens have access to healthcare.”
“I pledge to advance stem cell research.”
There’s no doubt that pedophiles would appreciate this next pledge:
“I pledge to show more love to strangers.”
And this:
“I pledge to sell a culture of intelligence, rather than ignorance.”
“I pledge my services to Barack Obama.”
The video then has celebrities asking “What’s your pledge?” and “I know you got a pledge, what’s your pledge?”
The video ends with “I pledge, to be servant to our President, and all mankind.”

With each passing day, it’s harder to continue to give President Barry the benefit of the doubt.
More than slightly creepy–Just like the celebrities and the president involved.

In this instance, the video wasn’t produced by the White House and it hasn’t been ascertained how a Utah PTA got the video.
It’s also obvious that the video was most likely meant for an audience older than elementary school kids.
