Obama Gun Control, Economy Spur Record Concealed Permit Applications
According to USA Today’s, “More ask to carry concealed weapons, Political, economic fears drive increase“, some states and counties are getting record numbers of people applying for a concealed weapon permit since last November when President Obama won the election.
Fearful of an increase in crime related to the downturn in the economy as well as fears that Obama and the Federal government will implement stricter gun control laws are the reasons cited for the huge increase in applications. So far,
-Only two states do not allow concealed weapons: Illinois and Wisconsin.
-Past applicants tended to be middle-aged men, the new surge in concealed weapon permit traffic are “grandmothers, older folks, young women, young men.”
-Florida has hired an additional 61 temporary workers to handle the 75,520 applications through June. Last year’s record was 90,331.
-Utah had 11,292 received in June, a record month of applications with 49,499 applications through June, breaking last year’s number.
-On July 22, the Senate narrowly defeated a federal law that would have allowed people to carry concealed weapons from state-to-state. The measure failed by two votes, 58-39. Twenty Democrats supported the measure, while Republicans, Luger of Indiana, and George Voinovich of Ohio opposed the bill.
