UK Prisoners Suffer Stigma of Having to Wear Orange
More hand wringing in Britain. The latest bit of self-flagellation has to do with criminals being required to wear easily-identifiable orange uniforms at public work projects. The British nannies are in an uproar at the indignity of it all.
Orange jackets make Community Payback offenders target for abuse
“Criminals wearing orange jackets while working in the community have been abused and jeered at by members of the public, according to study by leaders of the probation officers.
Community, church groups and at least one local council are refusing to accept placements involving offenders dressed in jackets bearing the words “Community Paybackâ€.”
Wow. That is just a shame. Those poor dears must suffer some public ridicule for such harmless pranks such as assault, burglary, drug dealing, and the myriad of other offenses the Brits can hardly be bothered with. Then there is this professional assessment:
“[The National Association Of Probation Officers] said that opposition was normally on the grounds that wearing the vest demeaned the criminal or that doing unpaid work in the community was punishment itself without offenders having to wear jackets.”
More likely doing work at all was demeaning in the eyes of these softies. But then again, they have actual evidence of abuse of these criminals.
“In one case a group of youths shouted “smackheads, lowlifers†at a group working in the community….”
Oh dear me. Someone called the lowlifers….’lowlifers’. Is there any wonder that the UK is in the midst of an epidemic of crime?
