The Daily Mail has some absolutely fantastic photos of snow monkeys soaking in the water in their own vocanic hot springs. For more photos, follow this [link].
The snow monkey “spa” soak is located at Yamanouchi, near where the Shiga Kogen volcano is located in the Nagano mountains in central Japan.
The snow monkeys, or Japanese macaque, are the farthest “northern” counterpart of their kind. It was in 1963 when purportedly a female snow monkey wandered into the area and waded into the hot spring to retrieve soybeans thrown into the springs. Residents of the area built the monkeys their own hot springs after the monkeys began to invade human’s hot tubs and spas.
