The United Kingdom was recently determined to be among the worst areas to live in Europe. This discovery, contested by Ireland, Albania, and Belarus, which have called for a recount, was a shock to the politicians of Britain.

The Herald reports:

“The UK offers among the lowest quality of life in Europe despite residents earning the highest incomes, according to research released today.

The price of fuel and other essential goods, below-average spending on health and education, short holidays and late retirement, place Britain just above Ireland at the bottom of the uSwitch.com European quality of life index.”

Not mentioned in the article was crime and immigration. Unmentioned because Brits are under the impression that the public is unaware that their streets are filled with angry Islamic supremacists, drunken yobs, and violent criminals. However, it does appear the secret may finally be out. For example according to VOA News, Britain has “announced new measures to “combat” the current “knife crime epidemic”:

“Britain’s top law and order official, Jacqui Smith, has announced a number of new initiatives aimed at combating the country’s growing knife crime epidemic. In London, Tom Rivers reports for VOA.

“Knife attacks on the streets of Britain are a growing problem, raising fears in communities up and down the country.

Four unrelated fatal stabbings one day last week in London brought to 50 the number of people slain by knife this year in the capital, and of those 20 were teenagers.”

While the knife issue was initially mainly an immigrant (apparently an English word for Muslims or Sikhs) problem, it has spread dramatically. First to the yobs, or white British street thugs, then to the middle class, as kids armed themselves in an attempt to protect themselves from other knife wielders.

It appears that even ordinary commuters carry knives in their cars. One study estimates that 70% of youths carry knives. Sixty people a day are knifed in Britain. Many are afraid to walk the streets after dusk onward and many of those who do go out are attacked in some fashion. There are entire Muslim sections in most cities that it would be very foolish for any Christian to enter, particularly a female.

Besides assault, burglary is another problem faced by the British. Over one million households a year, or one in five, report they were burglarized or an attempt at burglary had been made:

* Every 37 seconds a home somewhere in Britain is burgled.
* Every year there are over 1 million burglaries and attempted burglaries.
* 20% of households experience more than one incident a year. 13% are burgled twice and 7% three or more times.
* Between 1981 and 1993 burglaries increased by 137%. There was a decline through the rest of the 1990’s but which has now leveled off and 2002 showed a 5% annual increase.
* Aggravated burglary (where the occupiers are home at the time) rose 14% in 2002.”

So how have the Brits dealt with an incredible surge in criminality, open lawlessness, Islamic Supremacy, a decline of civilization?

With the panache we expect from the Loony Left, the UK had disarmed the citizenry, confiscating all handguns from ordinary householders, almost all rifles, and making the ownership of a shotgun almost impossible for the urban family. When that resulted in the predictable rise in crime (predictable to you and me but strangely not, to leftists), the Brits fought back by making most offenses jail-free.

Hmmm.

This policy needed a bit of fine tuning. People were getting hurt in ever greater numbers, so it seemed necessary to do something drastic to protect the citizenry so they made self defense illegal. That way the victim would not be hurt, declared the Loony Left and their Judges. Rape and robbery soared. And while the rapist and robbers walked free, the misunderstanding homeowners were regulary arrested, prosecuted, and served far more time than the aggressors in many instances. So government policy re-tuned itself once again.

So, no guns, right?

Wrong.

Britain has a huge and growing gun problem. To wit, the Brits are being murdered because only the criminals have guns. They made progress: less criminals were hurt or killed, but the Brits solved that in a unique way.

An Englishman’s home is his dungeon.

‘In America, unless one resides in a very small number of problematic inner-city quarters or wishes to make a career in the drug trade, one will live a life blessedly untouched by crime. In Britain, alas, it’s the peculiar genius of Home Office policy to have turned the entire country into one big, rundown, inner-city, no-go slum estate, extending from prosperous suburbs to leafy villages, even unto Upper Cheyne Row.

The murderers of John Monckton understood the logic of this policy better than the lethargic overpaid British constabulary. An Englishman’s home is not his castle, but his dungeon and ever more so – window bars, window locks, dead bolts, laser security, and no doubt biometricrecognition garage doors, once the Blunkett national ID card goes into circulation……there is virtually zero chance of a New Hampshire home being broken into while the family are present. But in England and Wales it’s more than 50 per cent and climbing. Which is hardly surprising given the police’s petty, well-publicised pursuit of those citizens who have the impertinence to resist criminals.”

As for ‘the constabulary’, it was recently leaked that a confidential study showed that it took 3 days to 3 weeks to see a Police Officer after the report of a crime. DBKP has reported on this phenomenon before and has even opined on the cause: it is easier to arrest law biding citizens than real criminals.

Nor did it surprise anyone here at DBKP that the initial response of the Loony Left that infests British society was to outlaw knives. What did shock us here at DBKP was that someone tried to do something rational.

Today it became legal in Britain to defend yourself and your home. The Loons were defeated but not before they put up a fight:

Have-a-go heroes’ get legal right to defend themselves

“Home owners and “have-a go-heroes” have for the first time been given the legal right to defend themselves against burglars and muggers free from fear of prosecution. They will be able to use force against criminals who break into their homes or attack them in the street without worrying that “heat of the moment” misjudgements could see them brought before the courts.

Under new laws police and prosecutors will have to assess a person’s actions based on the person’s situation “as they saw it at the time” even if in hindsight it could be seen as unreasonable.
For example, homeowners would be able stab or shoot a burglar if confronted or tackle them and use force to detain them until police arrive. Muggers could be legally punched and beaten in the street or have their own weapons used against them.”

Whoa. Kicking the ass of a guy trying to rape, rob or kill is OK? What a novel idea. The fact that the United Kingdom is on the verge crumbling into a New Nairobi might have a bit to do with it.

That this has to be enunciated in law is so astonishing that it shows the depths of delusion the Left encases itself in. Like the “we can’t drill our way out of this” mantra of high oil prices in the USA, (is there another way to get oil? Wy can everyone else drill for it except America?) the Brits have deluded themselves for years with the pretension that criminals were the victims of society, and victims of criminals were the ingrates of society. Such delusions are common: lobal Warming, pesticides, nuclear energy, second hand smoke, cancer risk, whatever the current fad of the control freaks may be that day. They view society as a vast experiment for their ideological pleasure. While real people die and suffer. A society of mice.
