The road to the John McCain-Sarah Palin rally contained a couple dozen Obama supporters.
McCain-Palin supporters parked in a mall parking lot about a half-mile away and walked up the hill to Consol Energy Field, home of the minor league baseball team, The Wild Things.
On the way, those on their way to the rally trudged past 15-25 protesters: Obama supporters, women’s reproductive rights advocates and a few Steelworkers for Obama.
Several of the same organizations protesting supported both Bill Clinton and John Edwards. Both Clinton and Edwards are famous supporters of women’s rights.
Some of the sign-wavers seemed to be there for the party, including one who apparently confused McCain with 1996 Republican nominee, Bob Dole. Dole was a spokesman for Viagra.
The Steelworkers Union had previously endorsed John Edwards. Like many Edwards’ trial lawyer backers and bundlers, they have switched their allegiance to Barack Obama.
Union brotherhood only goes so far: Palin’s husband is a member of the United Steelworkers Union. Barack Obama is not a member of any union, although the Rev. Jeramiah Wright, pastor of Obama’s Trinity Church, was enrolled at Virginia Union University, in Richmond VA in 1959.
Protect Women’s Rights: become an Obama Girl!
A look back at the plucky protesters. One shot that didn’t come out: two unnamed young women on their way to the stadium greeting the protesters with the one-fingered salute.

Good for the protestors! If the McPain ticket was coming to Long Island, I’d give them the one fingered salute!

LOL! First, the law does not allow US Senators to join a union, so you can’t blame Senator Obama for not being a union member. Second, Union University is a Southern Baptist university in Tennessee. It’s not a “Labor Union University.” A little research goes a long way.

Which would excuse Obama’s last 3 1/2 years.

Apparently, so does labeling tongue-in-cheek comments–something we don’t normally do for our regular readers who are able to pick up on it. BTW, our research indicates Jeremiah Wright was enrolled at Va. Union U. [From 1959 to 1961, Wright attended Virginia Union University--Wikipedia, Jeremiah Wright], as a closer reading of our article will reveal.

Before she was a politician, the union benefits provided by her husband’s union provided her and her family with good wages, health care and a pension. The “irony” isn’t that Obama isn’t in a union, but that McCain/Palin will continue to push the republican policies that give ever fewer workers the protections that unions provide.

so what are you saying Admin, by “which would excuse Obama’s last 3 1/2 years.” Do you know anything about who is allowed to join unions, and who isn’t under US law (established in 1935)? As a State representative, Barack Obama did not have the right to join a union. As I said, a little research goes a long way. Ignorance is a very ugly trait, but common, apparently, among you people.
have you seen the Steel Workers Union Statement on Gov Palin? Apparently not.
There was nothing in the post that would indicate that the reference to Union University was a tongue-in-cheek comment. Nice try. Again, ignorance is not pretty. Quite embarrassing, actually.

David,
And those policies would be?
Having been raised in a union family and having been a union member, the agenda of the union leaderships and union PACs are not the same as the agenda of many union members.
As my dad said the other day (a union member for the last 53 years): “The country has one vice-president; our International has nine. What do they need with all those vice-presidents?”
He says a lot of other things, not all as complimentary. Unions serve an important purpose in many fields, the craft and building professions especially being one of those areas….but the single biggest growth area for USA unions today is in government.
That’s creating union benefits on my dime, without the check of a competitive marketplace that workers in the private sector, both management and labor face. Some unions leaders are more concerned with short-term and personal gain than they are their union brothers.
If you don’t also know this, then I suspect you are part of the leadership.
When it comes to politics, union leaders will cut a deal with whoever offers them–not their members–a good deal. If that sounds cynical, then listen to the members. I do, on almost a daily basis.
That being said, I want to thank you for taking the time to stop by and read and leave a comment. Views such as yours, whether I agree with them or not, are what makes the world go round!
Thanks.

Mary Molinari,
If you have to explain humor, it’s a lost cause.
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to drop the “you people” label.
As far as the Steelworkers statement on Sarah Palin, I guess it’s not at all like their statement on John Edwards, their previous pick. I also guess that it was written by the Steelworkers’ leadership, who will almost certainly vote 100% for Barack Obama. How their membership votes, I will not guess–though I suppose that they would have you believe that it, too will be 100%.
We both agree that ignorance is a not a pretty thing, though as a former teacher, I would add that ignorance is no shame.
A day does not pass that I do not labor to correct my deficiencies.

I don’t know whether or not the “first dude” is a member of the USW anymore as it seems that his primary occupation is running the family salmon farm when not riding his snowmobile. The hackneyed “argument” that union leaders are out of touch with the membership is mostly NRTWC hooey(not all of it). The membership is entitled to vote for whomever they please, irrespective of the advice proffered by their elected leadership. What is the union supposed to urge its members to do? Vote for the union busting candidate because you like his/her stand on abortion? Be realistic-the leaderships job is to offer its membership all of the information available regarding a candidates positions on issues affecting labor-if the membership votes for the social position rather than the labor one it does not equate to the leadership being out of touch-it equates to them being no freakin’ good at their job.

Obama never joined a union because he has never spent a day of his life working a real job!
He spent his entire life in exotic places like Hawaii and Indonesia – he spent all of his school years, first homeschooled by his mother (a VERY Conservative approach), then in the most ELITE PRIVATE SCHOOL in the state of Hawaii!
Please, Palin, her husband and her kids all attended PUBLIC schools. Her parents were teachers, for goodness sake! I find the irony here insurmountable!
So, you blue-collar union folks are going to support the guy who NEVER had to step one foot into a public school? The guy who sends his own two daughters to PRIVATE SCHOOL? The guy who has never gotten his hands dirty? Over Sarah Palin who has never stepped foot into a private school, whose family has always attended public schools, and whose husband has worked every single day of his life getting his hands dirty doing real, honest work?
Personally, Obama lost me the day he called rural working-class Americans “Bitter folks who cling to guns and religion.” I find anyone who has the nerve to insult “ordinary” Americans absolutely disgusting. Even worse, I find anyone who calls himself a “Constitutional Lawyer” and then berates the United States Constitution and belittles Americans who actually believe in the Constitution, totally and completely unfit for the highest office in the Land.
And to the commenter named PJ: I too live on Long Island, and as a Ron Paul supporter, I would welcome Sarah Palin with open arms! At least she doesn’t need a team of 300 Foreign Policy Advisers to tell her how to think.
One more thing: Obama is right: The American People are NOT stupid. They are not going to fall for soaring rhetoric about “Change;” they do not want to change our country and our Constitution.
The PEOPLE want CHANGE in WASHINGTON, not in their private lives!
The People are not stupid enough to believe the guy who only knows how to TALK; they know who John McCain is and that he knows what he is doing – that he actually Walks the Walk.
And they know that he drives Conservatives and Republicans like me CRAZY by acting like an insane LIBERAL half the time.
So, how do I know that John McCain is the ONLY person who has ANY chance of CHANGING Washington? Because Obama has NEVER pissed off his Democratic Comrades the way John McCain has pissed off Conservatives. Obama is not buddy-buddy with any Republicans the way McCain is with Democrats. That alone proves McCain is the ONLY one who truly can change Washington. Whether I like him or not!
