Canada’s Human Rights Commission, Scientology, Anonymous and Fair Gaming
“Freedom of speech is an American concept, so I don’t give it any value.” Investigator for the Canadian Human Rights Commission
Scientology, the new age “religion” founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, has a new opponent, scores of anonymous protesters across the web who have aptly named themselves, Anonymous.
Anonymous, with its legions of cyber-warriors, has been busy exposing Scientology’s murky past and the inner workings of the “Church”, and its practice of “fair gaming”.
Damian DeWitt, a member of Anonymous, makes some great points about the “prosecution” of Free Speech by Canada’s largest oxymoron, the Human Rights Commission.
In Will Scientology Fair Game Anonymous in Canada’s Human Rights Tribunals?, Damian DeWitt gives an outline of Canada’s Human Rights Commission, how they began as “informal hearings” for the purpose of protecting “poor minorities but evolved into a major muzzler of free speech.
The Commission has been utilized by proponents of Islam. Such notables who have been prosecuted include Mark Steyn, Ezra Levant, Pastor Stephen Boissoin, and Gerry Armstrong. DeWitt also notes that people with different ideologies have all come to the same conclusion: the Canadian Human Rights Commission has become a menace to Free Speech.
DeWitt hypothesizes as to whether Scientology will eventually use the Commission in what is known as “Fair Gaming”, to come after Anonymous, and the effects of such a decision if the Commission were to rule in favor of the Scientologists.
Scientology has a long standing practice of what they refer to as “fair-gaming” where opponents are systematically crushed by methods such as tying their opponents up in court. Scientology has accused Anonymous of various crimes such as “religious” hatred, terrorism, computer hacking, death and bomb threats.
Lawsuits are a favorite “Fair Gaming” tool, where a person or organization is targeted, usually an errant Scientology member, who might “spill” the beans, who are then financially devastated fighting the multi-billion dollar organization in court. The Human Rights Commission is fodder for Fair Gaming, the perfect tool for Scientology to use against its detractor such as Anonymous.
For Scientology as for reactionary Islam the main attraction of the tribunals is that they are outside the legal system and lack its safeguards. There is no discovery and no trial by jury. Truth is no defense if you are accused of hate speech. The complainant merely has to feel disparaged, offended or hurt. All his costs are borne by the tribunal. The defendant bears the cost of lawyers for his legal defense, even if he wins, along with penalties and fines if he loses.
DeWitt makes an excellent point: the Human Rights Commission has become a joke, but a very dangerous one, one which is used by those who seek to permanently silence those who wish to speak out, even those whose opinions are highly inflammatory.
Charges against Steyn were dropped. The judge sniffed that, though Steyn was guilty of hate, prosecuting him was beyond the mandate of the tribunal, mostly because the case involved him quoting himself. A principal investigator for the tribunals has said, “Freedom of speech is an American concept, so I don’t give it any value.”
Freedom of speech cannot endure unless there are those who are willing to protect it. This Canadian clod has no clue that in uttering that inane phrase he was in fact, utilizing his own right to freedom of speech.
