Clinton: Pundits Ready to Fight Hillary Over Decision to Stay In Race
“Hell hath no fury like a pundit ignored.”
NOW, the gloves are coming off.
But it’s not Obama-Clinton or McCain-Obama. It’s Amalgamated Punditry vs. Hillary Clinton.
The pundit-acracy is pissed that the former first lady ignored their advice to pack it in and just go home last night. A herd of commentators declared that Clinton would be announcing her exit from the race in her NYC speech–especially after many had proclaimed Barack Obama had clinched the Democrat nomination.
Then, Clinton’s speech chain-sawwed the limb off. And after they all climbed out on it so confidently.
The following video had some pundits throwing objects at the TV screen–and others throwing up.
Almost immediately, pundit after pundit jumped into the ring–after first wiping the egg from their collective faces. What did they write? Let’s take a look.
The speech tonight was a remarkable one for a candidate who has lost the nomination, though not remarkable for a Clinton. It was an assertion that she had won the nomination and a refusal to concede anything to her opponent. Classless, graceless, shameless, relentless. Pure Clinton.
–Andrew Sullivan
“I think Clinton may be willing to offer Obama the vice presidency.”
–Ezra Klein
When Richard Nixon conceded defeat after running for Governor of California in 1962 many believed we would not have Nixon to kick around any more. By laying low and campaigning for others Nixon set himself up for a comeback. Clinton is doing the opposite. By refusing to concede and giving an appalling speech where she questions the legitimacy of Obama’s victory she reduces the chances of being accepted by Democrats in the future.
–Ron Chusid, Liberal Values
“She could have gotten a cabinet position or even Senate Majority Leader but after tonight she deserves zip. Obama will win in November without her so nothing for Hillary and Bill but a failed legacy. Perhaps there is some land available near Crawford.”
–Ron Beasley, NewHoggers
And finally, an observation from Daniel Larison, from Eunomia; one of the few whose blood pressure wouldn’t force an M.D. to clutch his heart:
It seems to me that everyone is getting ahead of themselves. Tonight Obama will technically “clinch” the nomination by crossing the 2,118 delegate threshold almost regardless of how well or poorly he does in the last two primaries, at which point the Clinton campaign will say, “But, of course, all those Michigan delegates you claim you have aren’t really yours, so you’re not there yet, ha ha!” This is what Michelle Obama complains about when she talks about how “they move the bar,” but “they” will keep “moving the bar” unless and until Obama cedes to Clinton a spot on the ticket.
One question to those who were surprised by the night’s outcome: If you were Clinton, would you drop out–before the skeletons were finished dropping out of Obama’s closet?
After campaigning for the presidency since January 2007–some would say November 1996?
Would you?
The talking/writing heads can yammer on as long as they like about “party unity”, but that’s just not in the Clinton calculus. Might not working on some of those super-delegate be on the HRC agenda?
Obama’s not been setting the world on fire lately: if his primary performances in the last six weeks had occurred earlier in the cycle, he would be the one angling for a VP slot now. And, his collections of missteps, gaffes and Obama-isms has given John McCain’s opposition research team hernias from lifting what must be a ton of material from the last month alone.
Who would be willing to lay cold cash that Clinton hadn’t noticed any of this?
It’s been a while since Obama’s scored any victories, other than North Carolina and among the super-delegates–Democrat Party hacks, as conservatives refer to them. If Clinton dropped out and then, a now-relaxed Barack Obama imploded, Hillary would be looking up Jack Kevorkian’s phone number.
Let’s hear from Andrew Sullivan again:
She will not go away. The Clintons will never go away. And they will do all they can to cripple any Democrat who tries to replace them. In the tent or out of it, it is always about them. And they are no longer rivals to Obama; they are threats.
Sullivan might sound upset, but he sledgehammered that last nail all the way to China.
