I do not personally own a firearm of any kind, I never have. The reason for this is that a gun is a tool that I have never felt the need for. This does not mean that I disagree in any way shape or form with your analysis of the second amendment, or of the moves to restrict the rights of gun owners. The simple fact is that there is no real debate on gun laws. People who believe as we do are simply denied a place at the table. The media will consistently take the position of gun control advocates; I cannot recall at any time in the last 20 years a point at which any television program gave a serious accounting of the pro-gun position. The closest they will come is to say, usually in a very snarky tone," the NRA says that we should prosecute the laws we have, instead of writing new laws." Now this is an accurate point, but the pro-gun position goes much further. I have yet to hear any media figure admit that ccw states enjoy a lower violent crime rate than restricted states like CA, or IL.

Beware of any discussion about the 2nd A. that does not also mention how the history of the 14th A. clarified how we are to interpret the 2nd A. today. John Bingham, the main author of Sec. 1 of the 14th A., included the 2nd A. when he read the first eight amendments as examples of constitutional statutes containing privileges and immunities that the 14th A. applied to the states. So there should be no doubt that the 2nd and 14th Amendments protect the personal right to keep and bear arms from both the federal and state governments as much as any other constitutional privilege and immunity protects other personal rights.

See the 2nd A. in the middle column of the following page from the Congressional Globe, a precursor to the Congressional Record. This is one of Bingham's discussions about the 14th Amendment.

2nd A. in Bingham's discussion of the 14th A.

Finally, note that the page referenced above is dated for more than two years after the ratification of the 14th Amendment. So Bingham was evidently reassuring his colleagues about the scope and purpose of the ratified 14th Amendment.
