Austrian Man Who Kept Daughter Sex-Slave: Another Man May be Involved
New details have emerged in the story of the Austrian man, Josef Fritzl, who held his own daughter as a sex-slave captive for 24 years: how another man may have been involved plus recollections of Fritzl as a sadistic bastard to his wife of 51 years, Rosemarie; of his treatment of Elisabeth as a small girl; and his behavior as a tyrant and despot to the entire Fritzl family.
While Josef Friztl is adamant that he was the only one who was involved in forcibly locking up his daughter and using her as a captive sex-slave to beat and rape her for a period of 24 years resulting in seven children, a witness has stepped forward and claimed that he met another man who was “allowed” into the forbidden cellar.
Alfred Dubanovsky, one of the Fritzl’s tenants, there were eight “flats” or apartments in the Fritzl “home”, claims he once met a man who was allowed to go into the cellar. Dubanovsky rented a flat that was directly overhead the hidden prison in the Fritzl basement. He claims Fritzl warned all the tenants that the cellar was wired electronically and that anyone who went into the area would be immediately thrown out of their flat.
Fritzl, who purportedly spent a majority of his “time” in the cellar, ostensibly to work on “technical drawings” of machines he sold to other companies, was known by some members of his extended family to be sadistic to his wife, Rosemarie, and a tyrant to his family of seven children and to three of the seven children borne to him by daughter Elisabeth in the family “dungeon”.
The three children, ages 16, 15, and 12, were chosen when they were babies by Fritzl to be allowed to be placed on the family door stoop with a “note” written by Elisabeth, telling her family she was unable to care for the babies. The other children, ages 19, 18, and 5, lived an even meager existence, locked away in the sunless secret prison bunker, the only source of the outside world, a radio and television Fritzl had installed.
Fritzl’s sister-in-law, his wife’s sister, Christine “R”, tells of family get-togethers where Fritzl would take “sadistic” pleasure in demeaning her sister in front of other family members, often making crude and sexual jokes in front of her plus he would also take the opportunity to “tell her off”. Christine said she found his behavior offensive especially in lieu of the fact the “everyone” knew the couple hadn’t had sex for years. What they didn’t know was that Fritzl was “having sex” with Elisabeth, regularly beating and raping her while she was locked away in the secret cellar prison.
Christine painted Fritzl as a “despot” who ruled over his home with an iron fist. Some have expressed outrage over Rosemarie, that she “should have known” something was wrong because Fritzl spent entire nights “working” in the basement and expressly “forbid” her to even “bring him a cup of coffee”.
In Rosemarie’s defense, if Fritzl was an authoritarian despot who made her life and the children’s lives miserable then any time he spent away was probably a “respite”. Sadly, it’s now known that those times he spent “working” in the cellar he was really inside the secret prison he had constructed, being super-sadistic to his daughter Elisabeth and the three children who were never allowed to see sunlight.
Elisabeth, the Family Scapegoat
So far it’s yet to have been determined whether any of Elisabeth’s four sisters were also molested by their father. And yet, in some families, one child becomes a “scapegoat”, the one child who for some reason is emotionally or physically abused while the others are relatively left alone. Elisabeth’s life in the Fritzl family may have fit this pattern of a severely dysfunctional family.
One family friend recalls Elisabeth getting the brunt of Fritzl’s displeasure, how she was a withdrawn and shy girl who was “beaten” more than the other children, who got “more slaps” and was forbidden to take family trips with the mother and other children, how she had to “stay home with Fritzl”.
Of course, these “transgressions” of Elisabeth were most likely manufactured by Fritzl as a way to ensure Elisabeth would remain home and in his sadistic clutches. Elisabeth claims she was eleven the first time her father raped her, that he continued to abuse her, that once she had turned 19 and found a job to support herself, her father drugged her then locked her into the makeshift prison she herself had helped him to build.
Fritzl had used a government grant for building a nuclear fallout shelter to construct the hidden cellar prison behind a secret door that opened by way of remote control and a “secret” code.
According to Christine, Fritzl acted as a “drill instructor” to the other children, that the only escape for them was by “marrying” early.
Some seem to be unable to fathom how Fritzl got away with being a tyrannical and despot father, aside from the terribly monstrous way he treated Elisabeth and her seven children, why his wife didn’t leave him. Rosemarie’s sister believes she didn’t leave Fritzl because she was basically naive and ignorant when she married the man at 17, that she never learned a trade nor took an outside job to support herself.
Assigning Blame to Rosemarie
In dysfunctional familyspeak, Rosemarie would be labeled an enabler, the one who “enabled” the perpetrator, Josef, to act the despot for her own reasons. She may have decided to keep her family together “at any price” or for “the sake of the family”. She may made some sort of figurative “deal with the devil” that while Josef was a tyrant and a despot and treated her like dirt at least her and her children lived in a nice, comfortable home. But then again, people saw how Josef treated Elisabeth differently from the other children. People saw that he “beat” her more, that she was made to stay “at home” with Josef when Rosemarie took the other children on holiday. Did Rosemarie ever “see” what others outside the family saw in terms of Josef’s treatment of Elisabeth?
In Rosemarie’s defense, what she didn’t know was that the man who treated her with such contempt, the father of her children, was sadistically torturing their daughter in a secret prison in the cellar. But what some of us wonder is this, just what did Rosemarie know?
Did she ever wonder why Josef found the quiet, withdrawn, and shy little Elisabeth to be so offensive? Did she ever wonder why Elisabeth was such a “bad” little girl, at least around her husband? Did she ever wonder why Josef would make Elisabeth stay at home with him instead of going on family holidays with the other children? Did she ever, for once, think about this little girl’s well being and happiness instead of kowtowing to her husband?
And later, did Rosemarie ever wonder why her husband would take wheelbarrows full of food into the cellar or did Rosemarie, resigned to living the rest of her life with Josef, decide to turn a blind eye to his comings and goings and secretly wish he’d spend all his time away from the family home or at least down in the cellar?
While Rosemarie can remain blameless in Josef locking up Elisabeth, she cannot escape from the fact that she, by her own volition, allowed her husband to treat her children like subjects instead of human beings, that she allowed her husband to talk down to her and treat her sadistically in front of her family and she allowed Josef to treat Elisabeth as the family scapegoat. She can paint herself a victim but we’re not buying it. She taught her children to acquiesce, that her husband’s agenda took precedent over her own children’s right to live in an warm, loving environment.
Even if she didn’t know what Josef was up to these past 24 years there will always be those who don’t buy her story, that believe she knew more than she would be willing to admit and those who believe that she should have known something was not right in the Fritzl home.

There are some situations that occur right under your nose that you are unable to smell… it’s too close. Of all of the girls & boys molested in their own home by relatives (fathers, uncles, whathavyou), I find it IMPOSSIBLE to believe their loving & caring mothers “knew” and did nothing. We have a NFL player whose Mom was @ work reveal abuse at the hands of her husband. I for one don’t believe she knew. My neighbor… I don’t believe she knew what was happening in her home to her children. My mother-in-laws mother couldn’t have known – & she was a fighter. My Aunt is in prison because she didn’t know & when she “thought she heard her daughter say what she said” she killed that bastard of a husband she bore three (3) children for in their kitchen! Doused him w/cooking oil & lit the torch while beating the shit out of him. Yeah she’s in prison – not him. My lil cousin, now 29, continues treatment and will never have a love relationship.
Hell, history reveals a sadistic pattern of males raping the children. The problem is our society has turned such a blind eye to the continuous pattern of sexually abusing our children & blaming the victims (children & mothers who are often abused themselves) that actually fully blaming the culprit is just out of the norm.
The only person responsible for Elizabeth’s treatment is the sadistic hellspawn who planted her seed – her father! The tone of the article sends the wrong message. Such should not be published again. Rosemarie has got to feel like fucking killing that old animal & should be given the opportunity to do so

I think it is very possible for Rosemarie to not know what was going on. Even those of us who have teenagers will turn a blind eye just to keep the peace in the household. The husband may have started in early on Elisabeth. The wife became so used to the husband being in charge of the discipline for the daughter, she didn’t question what was going on. It became so common place that it had a feel of normalcy. Be careful what stones you throw just in case the next one is aimed at yourself.

This person is a “crazy man” and should be “locked up”. I also “don’t understand” why this “article” has so many “quotation marks” when they are “not required”. Perhaps the writer should take a “lesson” in “writing”. Even my school-aged “children” laughed, not at the “article” but the way it was “written”.
