Fritzl was also given a government grant which he used to finance his “project”. The government grants were given out for people who wished to build Cold-War nuclear fallout bunkers. Fritzl used the funds to build a hidden fortified bunker used to imprison his 19-yr.-old daughter Elisabeth beginning in 1984. Elisabeth was to remain in the windowless series of rooms for 24 years, bearing her father seven children, one child purportedly died shortly after death. Fritzl is accused of tossing the baby boy’s body into a furnace. Fritzl’s nuclear fallout shelter was approved for a room the size of 20 square meters. According to investigators when Fritzl drugged his daughter and locked her into the secret cellar-prison in 1984 there was only one room. Elisabeth was chained up with a dog collar and leash for the first nine months. The cellar-prison remained one room for the next nine years until Fritzl began adding more rooms. Amazingly he added tile floors and walls, a sink, tub, toilet, washing machine, stove, and a television and radio while allegedly no one upstairs was the wiser. Police are investigating just how Fritzl was able to move the vast amounts of cellar soil needed to carve out the rooms in the secret cellar-prison. It’s estimated that it would have taken at least 17 lorries or large trucks to remove that amount of materials. Fritzl’s wife of 50 plus years, Rosemarie, claims she had no idea her husband had built the secret prison in the cellar where her daughter was kept a sex-slave captive. People cannot fathom how Rosemarie didn’t notice her husband’s consuming desire to stay in the cellar. He had told his family he was working on “projects” in his cellar and not to disturb him. A long time ex-tenant said that Fritzl warned tenants that the cellar was off-limits and electronically monitored, that if he caught them there their lease would be immediately terminated. The ex-tenant also remembered seeing Fritzl pushing a wheelbarrow full of food into the cellar at night. The mystery of how Fritzl was able to keep his cellar-prison a secret for 24 years continues, how he was able to construct it, removing vast amounts of soil, and then bring in the materials to continue to enlarge it. How no one seemed to notice his ongoing project of renovating the cellar where all the results were behind a secret door. Fritzl remains behind bars, Austrian law allows judges to keep suspects locked up until they’ve been charged. Fritzl has admitted locking his daughter up but denies he raped her. He wants us to believe he kept her chained up in a dog collar and leash because their relationship was consensual. We doubt it. We also doubt he’s insane, the defense his attorney is working on. He was sane enough to realize that he needed to keep his cellar-prison secret otherwise he’d go to jail, therefore he knew right from wrong. No amount of jail time will make up for what he did to his daughter but keeping him locked up will at least keep him away from her or from any new victims.
