Austrian Father Who Held Sex-Slave Daughter: “I am no Monster!”
If we had no idea who these two were then we might think to ourselves, look at this lovely couple celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2006, perhaps someone’s parents or grandparents, they seem so happy. We wouldn’t know that the man in the photo was a bonafide monster.
Even Monsters Have Feelings
More photos and details have emerged in the story of the Austrian man who kept his daughter captive as a sex-slave in a secret cellar prison for 24 years, bearing the man seven children while 73-yr-old Josef Fritzl wants everyone to know that he is “no monster”.
Fritzl made a statement today via his attorney and stated that if it weren’t for him the 19-yr-old Kerstin “wouldn’t be alive” and he “made sure she gets to a hospital”.
Kerstin remains in an induced coma since being admitted to the hospital April 19, her critical illness a catalyst for the release of her mother and two brothers who shared the dingy cellar prison beneath the Fritzl family home.
There’s no word yet as to what caused Kerstin’s illness when Josef allowed her mother Elisabeth to carry her daughter upstairs. Elisabeth was then put back into the cellar prison while Josef purportedly took the girl to the hospital.
Fritzl said that he could have “killed them all” and “nothing would have come out of that”. He also claimed that “No one would have ever known about it”.
Fritzl could have killed his daughter and the three children left to live in the cellar-prison and no one would have been wiser. Unless a former tenant’s observation, that he had seen Fritzl take another man into the cellar, something none of the tenants who dwelled in the 8 flats located in the Fritzl family compound were allowed to do. They were warned by Fritzl that the cellar was wired for electronic surveillance and that if he found any of the tenants had ventured into the area he would immediately void their lease and kick them out.
Which makes us wonder, why did Fritzl choose to let Elisabeth and the three children locked in the cellar-prison live? Rape, torture, and years of imprisonment inflicted on his victims, but not murder.
Elisabeth was kept captive by her father for 24 years beginning in 1984 when she was 19. He drugged, then locked her inside on a dog chain for the first nine months where he viciously raped his daughter. At that time the cellar-prison had only one room, it would be nine more years before more rooms were added on. During that period Elisabeth’s children, Kerstin, who was born in 1988 and Stefann, born in 1989, were forced to watch Fritzl repeatedly rape their mother.
Fritzl is now arguing that he is “no monster”.
Elisabeth bore her father seven children, one child, a twin boy of Alexander, age 12, died shortly after birth, his body purportedly thrown into a furnace.
Fritzl acted as midwife and also decided to take three of the children away from Elisabeth and the dank dungeon cellar to “raise” them upstairs with his wife and Elisabeth’s mother, Rosemarie. Fritzl had Elisabeth write a note for each of the three babies left upstairs on the outside stoop. The note, dictated by Fritzl, asked her parents to help raise the baby, that she, Elisabeth was unable to.
Lisa, age 16, Monika, 15, and Alexander, 12, were the “lucky” children, the children Rosemarie and Josef adopted as their own, while the three remaining children, Kerstin, 19, Stefann, 18, and 5 yr.-old Felix lived with their mother in the cellar-prison of five rooms, locked away behind a heavily constructed hidden door.
Fritzl might argue that he wasn’t a monster in that he put in “amenities” not found in other cellar-prisons such as a tub, sink, toilet, washing machine, stove, television and radio. He could also argue that he kept his captives “well fed” as he was seen pushing a wheelbarrow loaded with food and supplies into the cellar at night by other tenants.
Fritzl also stated that he could have “killed them and then sealed the place with concrete; it would have been easy”.
We have no doubt that Fritzl could have killed his captives and then sealed them inside with concrete with no one the wiser. But does this type of argument mitigate Fritzl’s “monster” factor?
Fritzl is now getting a small taste of his own medicine as he’s currently locked up in St. Poelton Prison, it could be months before he’s charged. Fritzl is 73 years old, even if he’s sentenced to a long time term we doubt he’ll live long enough to serve it.
Fritzl’s attorney has signaled he plans to serve up an insanity defense:
In an interview broadcast late Sunday, attorney Rudolf Mayer said he believes Fritzl has a serious mental disorder and that anyone with that kind of psychological illness “didn’t choose” to do what police allege he did.
Is Fritzl “insane” and is his attorney correct when he stated that Fritzl “didn’t choose” to do what the “police allege he did”?
The Insanity Defense
Fritzl, crazy like fox, has retained one of Austria’s top criminal lawyers, Dr. Rudolf Mayer. Mayer is already publicly arguing the insanity defense for his client, that Fritzl is “someone who did what he did would have to be psychologically sick”. Mayer also stated that the “question of sanity”, whether “Fritzl knew he could be held accountable for his actions – will be central to the case”.
Was there anything in Fritzl’s behavior which points to someone who “knew they could be held accountable for their actions”?
Fritzl had begun planning his cellar-prison back in 1978, he applied for and received a government grant which was supposed to be used to build a nuclear fallout shelter. The door to the secret cellar prison was hidden. Fritzl began covering for Elisabeth’s disappearance back in 1984 by having Elisabeth write a series of notes, the first one imploring her family to “leave her alone” and “let her life her own life”. Fritzl knew he had to keep his activities secret, that holding his own daughter a sex-slave beneath his home for 24 years meant he knew it was wrong, illegal, and could get him into big trouble.
The fact that he didn’t kill his captives could be argued that he wasn’t insane. An insane person might well have killed them. Would a clinically insane person care whether the public considered them a monster?
Fritzl argues that he’s no monster but when you take someone and lock them in a secret dungeon and then proceed to rape and beat them for 24 years and impregnate them that kind of behavior could be labeled as the work of a monster. But then again, perhaps Fritzl is a monster with feelings. He feels we shouldn’t call him a monster since he didn’t kill his daughter and her children. Or that he took Kerstin to the hospital and eventually released Elisabeth and the other two children.
We’ve weighed whether not killing his captives and/or taking Kerstin to the hospital were mitigating factors in labeling Fritzl a monster. We’re fairly certain, based on the totality of Fritzl’s actions, that he is, indeed, a monster. He may not have killed his captives and he did feed and clothe them and let them watch television, so at times, and this will be part of his legacy, he was a “nice” monster, but a monster nonetheless.

Dr. Albert Reiter, who is treating Kerstin, said Monday that while her condition is still “grave,” it “has improved somewhat.”
“She has become more stable, but despite that we have to continue to keep her under sedation and give her respiratory help,” Reiter said, noting it is not clear how long she will be kept under sedation. |

Clearly a man (or MONSTER I should say) clutching at straws!! How he has the Ordasity to claim “Im not a Monster” Is beyond me…….
Trying to convince people that, because he didn’t actually murder the victims it makes it less of a crime! The way I see it is, he just couldn’t bear for his sick games to come to an end!
I think whether or not Fritzl is insane or not is beside the question. I agree its always useful to try and understand why criminals act in such ways however….Whats been done has been done & he deserves to suffer. Not that he will of course! I mean, how can someone of 73 suffer, he’ll be dead soon! A shame really because it means he’ll have gotten off lightly……Leaving his poor daughter & her children to try & resume some sort of normal life!
I’ve been meaning to read the book, quite rightly named ‘MONSTER’ for a while now. I’d like to know more about the Wife Rosemarie!!!

“He may not have killed his captives and he did feed and clothe them and let them watch television, so at times, and this will be part of his legacy, he was a “nice†monster, but a monster nonetheless.”
No way. None of this makes him nice. These are tiny concessions that do NOTHING to mitigate his crimes. I can’t believe you’re even considering that there may be some ‘nice’ part of this monstrous abuser. He stole her life and her freedom and her dignity, and that of her children. The day he started abusing her at eleven, he became a monster. If he could still be violently raping and beating her, he would be. He is 100% a monster and feeding his captives and letting them watch a little TV is absolutely nothing.

daughter’s whereabouts and situation and that the
husband’s stories were just far too incredulous

After all — think about it — daughter runs away as a
very young teen; daughter mysteriously disappears
at the age of 18 (an age when she can both make
her own decisions and choose to get away from
her father and even bring charges against him); the
(convicted-rapist/arsonist) father gets a letter from
daughter 1 month after her disappearance which
ridiculously claims she has joined a cult and does
not want to have any contact with the family – yet
amazingly then later chooses (for 3 years in a row)
to simply leave 3 of her newborn babies on the
doorstep of very home that she tried to run away
from at least 2 X’s before and is “allegedly thoughtâ€
to have finally left in order to join some sort of
“phantom†cult (a “cult†which, unlike every other
cult, just somehow, seemingly has no desire to try
to indoctrinate the youth from birth, but rather it
simply allows it’s members to select a home –one
which in fact, is both not a part of the cult AND is
the very home from which the member ran in order
to join the cult —to raise their babies and kids of
the cult members) –ALL THE WHILE – the father
forbids ANYONE to ever for ANY REASON dare to
go ANYWHERE NEAR the mysterious basement
(which he always keeps locked, disappears to for
hours and days on end; has ‘unseen’ bathroom
equipment installed; and has a cement-barricaded
door installed which both has a security-code and
which was so complicated it needed inspection

Just 2 years before the “discovery†of what this

and former kidnap victim, was also found in Austria.
It was discovered that the other young kidnap /
rape victim had disappeared 8 years earlier and
had been held in a basement / dungeon where
she had been repeatedly raped the entire time
by the individual who had also kidnapped her.
Now —- even if the public was expected to
simply throw all common sense to the wind
and accept this monster’s devil-wife’s excuse

it still stands to reason that after hearing about
the case of the other young girl 2 years earlier

I’ve followed this story for the past few years, clearly, reading every comment above, there is not a single soul in this world that doesn’t believe this man to be a monster, he is satan’s spawn and should be dealt with accordingly; i don’t know how the attorney’s that represent him can look at themselves every day! This man planned this, he knows right from wrong and for him to find any justification for his actions, for him to try and explain away the horrific things he’s done by saying, “I could have killed them but I didn’t”, and “I let them eat and watch TV and I clothed them” is the most ridiculous accountability I’ve ever heard, what a crazy, sick person he is, there is no justification for his actions, there is no way that he didnt know that what he was doing was wrong, yet this is how his case is going to be presented; what a waste of State’s time and money; this guy should fry, in fact, this guy should be put on the streets in a cage, naked for all to see and abuse; he deserves nothing less than the humilation, pain, torture and loss of life that he has provided to his daughter, and his, (pardon me while i vomit in my mouth) his grandchildren/children! And, on another note, I dont believe there is any way on God’s green earth that his wife couldnt have known of this, even if she didnt know details, she had to have put things together; even if she was extremely afraid of this man, she knew and she is just as responsible, she is an accomplis and should be brought to trial herself; there is just no way that she couldnt know! Fry the bastard! This is perhaps one of the most disgusting stories I’ve ever followed and the only reason i continue to pick it up every few months is to find out if they have fried him yet! His daughter and his grandchildren/children will never live normal lives, his should be taken away completely so they dont have to worry about him ever again! I get pissed off every time I read about him, emotions of every range surge, can you imagine how his victims must feel?

I think that all of the publc comments about this man should be sent to him, he should be forced to read them, lets see if he can stomache reading what people think of him, that people do view him as a monster, that people do think of him as disgusting and repulsive, let him deal with that; he’s so worried about the way people view him, are you seriously kidding me right now! WOW!
I’ve read past articles, some time ago so i cannot give direct quotes, that he has a background of emotional and physical abuse as he was growing up, inflicted upon him by his mother, some of the things i read, i remember to be horrific as well; however, having said that, it still does not excuse his actions; most often, abusers come from a long line of abuse in their lives, that does not justify their own actions as an adult!
