Can you sue a snakeoil salesman?

Al Gore may be facing a potential lawsuit over Global Warming according to the British newspaper, the Telegraph.

The medicine peddlers used a number of tricks and stunts. The larger traveling shows, employing advance men to herald their arrival, entered town with circus-like fanfare, typically with a band leading the procession of wagons. Skits and other diversions were used to attract audiences, who eventually were treated to the “Lecture” (which, when medicine shows expanded into radio, became the commercial). Assistants who moved through the crowds were often garbed as Quakers to lend an air of moral respectability. Native Americans were frequently recruited to promote the notion of “natural” medicine which was given names like Wright’s Indian Vegetable Pills, Seminole Cough Balsam, and various Kickapoo cures (Holbrook 1959, 196-215; Munsey 1970). According to journalist Catherine Elsworth, the former founder of the Weather Channel and meteorologist John Coleman spoke of a lawsuit against Gore during a conference in March, that since then Coleman has received “thousands and thousands of emails with lots of support” and “thousands of these people want to donate to a legal fund to sue Al Gore”.

Elsworth noted that Coleman feels the court would be the venue to settle the issues relating to the “hype” of Global Warming, especially those who are involved in selling carbon credits.

Gore’s carbon footprint may be the size of Godzilla’s, but he eases his conscience with ‘carbon offsets.’ He buys them from himself. And every time someone else buys them, Big Al gets richer. Source - Investor’s Business Daily

Al Gore, the Global Warming Messiah, stands to make literally millions of dollars selling stocks in the tax exempt company he founded and is chairman of the board, Generation Investment Management LLP..

In any event, a cowboy named Clark Stanley, who called himself “The Rattlesnake King,” sold a Snake Oil Liniment that was reputedly “good for man and beast.” In 1893, at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Stanley is said to have held crowds spellbound as, dressed in colorful western garb, he slaughtered hundreds of rattlesnakes, processing the juices into the cure-all.

A circa 1890s advertisement described Stanley’s snake oil as “A wonderful pain destroying compound.” It was “the strongest and best liniment known for the cure of all pain and lameness.” To be “used external [sic] only,” it treated “rheumatism, neuralgia, sciatica, lame back, lumbago, contracted muscles, toothache, sprains, swellings, etc.” It also, the ad said, “cures frost bites, chill blains, bruises, sore throat, [and] bites of animals, insects and reptiles,” in fact being “good for every thing a liniment should be good for.” Promising “immediate relief,” it sold for fifty cents a bottle (Fowler 1997, vi, 10-12). Gore’s film, An Inconvenient Truth, faced judicial scrutiny in the British courts in October 2007, when a UK school official refused to show the film to students.

High Court Judge Michael Burton ruled that Gore’s film contained nine significant errors. That while the film was “substantially based on scientific research and fact, the errors were made in the context of alarmism and exaggeration”. The judge also found that the film violated laws in showing films to students which were “partisan political views”.

As for what type of lawsuit could be brought against Gore, we’re not quite sure. Perhaps Snake Oil Saleman with defective product.

So far the MSM has ignored Gore’s habit of shaming for profit and the massive amount of money he has made and stands to make pedaling his gloom and doom prophesies. Scientists and other professionals who disagree with Gore and the Global Warming Warmongers are being systematically shut out and shunned. It was the MSM that was supposed to be the neutral party but instead has basically turned a blind eye to Gore’s shenanigans.

We look forward to a court of law and the exposure of one of the greatest scams to ever be perpetrated on the public, a la Al Gore. That’s if, you can sue a snake oil salesman.

There are a number of questions, among them:

    (1) will Al Gore self-destruct on his own weight?
    (2) could the controversy around a law-suit add to his popularity and delay that self-destruction?
    (3) will Goreism set back true-green conservation and then lead to a renaissance in post-consensus/post-”tainted-peer-review” science?

    My suggestion: let him self-destruct!
