Eddie Rickenbacker led an amazing life. In fact, his life was so complete for his 83 years you could credibly claim he led the equivalent of three incredible lives. Few persons could even assemble the resume of accomplishments he did.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Rickenbacker

His autobiography (written with his brother Victor) is an exciting, and entertaining read. Well worth your time. While I cannot verify the account of feeding the seagulls, the incident of being adrift at sea and the seagull s true [though as I recall Rickenbacker stated in his autobiography -- and I am going from memory of a book I read over 35 years ago -- that the seagull never made a sound or attempt to get away. ] Rickenbacker considered the bird providence sent. And he was always grateful for the life of that bird that sustained him and his crew.

Rickenbacker and his crew's survival at 24 days at sea remain to this day a record.
