Ronald Reagan Video: The Original Yes We Can Speech
The original “Yes, We Can!” speech given by Ronald Reagan.
Classic Reagan–for anyone who’s never seen it; as a reminder, for those who have.
In spite of all the staged fainting and media swoon, Barack Obama is a mere shadow.
Four minutes that will make you realize the difference that 28 years makes in serving up presidential candidates.

Uh…O’Grady, you going to tell me black people have a better chance of attaining freedom and dignity on the individual level anywhere else? Let’s ask history:
Jimi Hendrix, Toni Morrison, Walter Payton, Colin Powell, Maya Angelou, J.C. Watts, Sydney Portier, Tony Dorsett, Hank Aaron, Josephine Baker, Willie Brown, Eva Clayton, John Conyers, W.E. B. Dubois, Marcus Garvey, Alex Haley, Wilt Chamberlain, Billie Holiday, Zora Hurston, Quincy Jones, Jesse Jackson, B.B. King, Martin Luther King, Wilt Chamberlain, Condoleeza Rice, Derek Walcott, Langston Hughes…Oh…and, Barack Obama.
Unless you weren’t paying attention.

Read a little history, OK? Most “Blacks” prospered in the 20th century unlike they had anywhere else in the world and at any time previous.

Read up? I’d say you need to get real. A few chosen blacks prospering against a mountain of active discriminatory laws is no feat to toot your broken trumpet about.
As for Reagan, please avail a free education on his role preventing legal action against Bob Jones University, in the early ’80s. It’ll change your opinions, pronto.
Reagan was forced to back out with his tail between his legs, later, due to public pressure.

Sarah O’Grady,
If you think a mountain of discriminatory laws were enacted, you need to provide a link or a citation (not from some opinion piece by a NY Times hack).
That’s called evidence and it will help prevent things devolving into name-calling. There’s no need to argue about facts: look them up. That goes double for Reagan and Bob Jones U.
BJU is a private university that was retro-actively hit with back taxes after failing to change its campus dating policies. Whether you agree or disagree with the policies, the retro-active assessment of taxes is an onerous government activity.
Reagan asked the Justice Dept. to drop the cases, they did. He asked them to reinstate them, they did. Public pressure did play a part. Bob Jones paid their taxes, eventually changing its policies. It never sought re-instatement of its tax-exempt status. However, no one was forced to go to BJU.

To talk about “Reagan was forced to back out with his tail between his legs” shows your viewpoint. Every time the federal goverment triumphs over a small group–a private university, parents, a small business –I wonder if those who cheer understand that the federal government knows no favorites when it comes to restricting freedom and choice.
Those that cheered the government over BJU decisions will most likely be the first to cry “FOUL!” when those same decisions are used to outlaw same-sex and AFro-centric private schools.
Thanks for reading and commenting.

It was because of Ronald Reagan that I went from being a “I don’t give a fuck” type person to a Conservative. The man was great and there will never ever be anyone who will come close to that greatness. If you ever get out to LA, make a trip to the Reagan Museum, its fabulous and we’ve been 3 times. Unfortunately what we have now and will be getting next year is the end of what was once a great country. Thank god I’m old and will miss the total implosion.

Sarah, you wrote: Truth is a bitch, ain’t it?
Excuse me…did you say, “ain’t it?”, and also use an expletive while trying to make a point? How can you possibly have the nerve to call someone else an idiot? Ugh, Girl, go back to school and learn some grammar! Hey, and while you’re at it, check out a history book or two.
I’m so sick of hearing about black oppression. What have YOU done personally to move your race forward? My guess…Nothing! Your improper usage of grammar and lack of eloquent speech is what will keep you down, not whitey!
It’s all this “you owe me” attitude that will continue to divide races rather than bring them together. Enough, already! Please, for the love of mankind…just STOP!

Why is it that super conservatives always pull the race card before anybody else? Obama’s message of change will only be an ode to this great nation, and his contributions will blow Reaganomics out of the water. The only thing that I’m truly afraid of… Obama is going to compete with Reagan’s assasination attempts. Racist people make the GOP look bad.

Regular Guy,
Obama’s “contributions” will blow Reaganomics out of the water? By “contributions” you mean tax us too death and increase government spending, right?! Give me a break! As far as racists making the GOP look bad, how do you feel about all the people that voted for Obama simply because he is an African American? Racism is a two way street pal, sad-but true.

Um, just wondering… when did an ultra conservative pull a race card in this discussion?
The first to pull a race card was Sarah O’Grady. Everyone else has responded with great offense to her comment.
Think back with an open mind, and you will see that conservatives do not pull race cards; blacks do. Whites are far too afraid to mention race at all. We try to stay as far away from it as we can, because it can and will be used against us in every and any way possible.
In fact, it was even used against Michelle Obama! She was criticized for not wearing clothes that black women designed. My goodness, what does it matter? Maybe she wore what she liked. It was coincidence and not intention that none of her gowns were designed by black designers. She certainly didn’t go against them on purpose. Heck, she’s probably the most racist black woman I know of, and even she isn’t safe from the criticisms of race…from her own people nonetheless!
I’m so sick of race being brought up at all. Why can’t we see Barack Obama as our newest President and nothing more? Each time the fact that someone is black or white is pointed out, it takes us one step backward in the fight to eliminate racial divide and tension.
When Americans stop seeing color, we will eliminate racial divide, but not one minute before then.
Barack Obama WAS elected because of the sheer fact that he is a black man – that is a fact. Blacks came out in droves for the first time in their lives to vote, and many didn’t have a clue where he stood on the issues.
So, this is where we are now. He is now our President (not my choice, and not because of color). Let’s ALL pray to God that he finds the necessary strength, knowledge, diplomacy and fortitude that it will take to bring this great nation back together, and move us forward. We need a better tomorrow, and I hope he succeeds in bringing that to America. And folks, please, let’s stop seeing him as our first black President, and just start seeing him as our 44th President. Let’s also pray that he is our most successful President to date. We should always continue to hope that each new president is better than the last. Ronald Reagan was the last of the great Presidents, so far. I believe this is undeniably true; however, I also continue to hope for better each time we inaugurate a president…shouldn’t we all?

I feel very fortunate and proud to have been an American during his presidency.
Thanks Cuchieddie for the invite… I’ll have to go to the Ronald Reagan museum some day out in LA.
God Bless the USA!

reagan truly was our last great leader ; all others have in some way either morally or legally violated the constitution. reagan restored the economy, healed americas image world wide(he is still refered to as the american miracle), cut taxes, limited government, and brought pride back to america. when i hear black people talk about their ancestors being oppressed i tell them my ancestors are jews. we went through more shit than anyone, so blacks need to get the hell over it ,damn!!!!!!!!!!
i cant wait until i run for president. hopefully obama hadnt destroyed us by then. i beleive strongly in eveything reagan said
to sum it all up “government is not the answer its the problem”
if people think the government should help them with everything then they need to read the constitution
