According to Robert Spencer, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is revamping the State Department Lexicon with the orders to eliminate the words jihad and jihadi.

The argument, of course, is the old Streusand/Guirard claim that by using the word jihad, we’re validating the jihadist claim to be waging jihad. Of course, it’s ridiculous to think that the U.S. State Department carries any validating authority within the Islamic world to determine what is Islam and what isn’t. This would be the first time that unbelievers have set the meaning of Islamic theology for Muslims.

We’ve never come across this before. Forbidding people to use the very words your enemies used to declare war on you?

Just imagine, what if Roosevelt’s Secretary of State had forbidden the State Department to use the words “Pearl Harbor” or “Nazi” because they didn’t want to offend anyone?

Is this another instance of the Department’s schizophrenic behavior in regards to the War on Terror? How long before the words “terror” or “war” are also stricken from the books?

While the religion Islam is subject to multiple interpretations within its own sects, i.e., some Muslims use jihad to describe a spiritual struggle against evil while others use the concept of jihad to justify terrorist attacks against “enemies” of Islam. Which Muslims have we been at war with?

From Osama Bin Laden’s “terrorism” bible, “Military Studies in the Jihad Against the Tyrants”:

“These young men realized that an Islamic Government would never be established except by bomb and by rifle. Islam does not coincide with or make a truce with unbelief, but rather confronts it.

The confrontation that Islam calls for with these godless and apostate regimes does not know Socrates debates, Platonic ideals, nor Aristotelian diplomacy. But knows the dialogue of bullets, the ideals of assassination, bombing and the destruction and the diplomacy of the cannon and machine gun.

There you have it, the use of the word jihad in the context of war against the United States by none other than Bin Laden in the name of Islam.

While some may recall Bin Laden as a fuzzy cave dwelling character, others remember Bin Laden declared war on the United States pre-9/11, a declaration that resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent men, women, and children, and the destruction of the World Trade Towers. The previous excerpt was lifted from Bin Laden’s Terrorism Bible seized from a home in Manchester, England after 9/11.

In the year since the September 11 attacks, few more chilling documents have emerged than “Military Studies in the Jihad Against the Tyrants,” a how-to terrorism manual that investigators believe has been used by followers of Osama bin Laden.

The 180-page volume, seized from the Manchester, England home of a bin Laden disciple, offers jihad members guidance on subjects such as assassination, forging documents, and preparing poisons in its 18 chapters. The terrorism manual was placed into evidence last year by prosecutors during the federal trial of four men accused of involvement in the 1998 bombing of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania (the below English translation was also placed in evidence). We find it ironic that the very Muslims who declared war on us and struck the first devastating blow on 9/11 are very clear and succinct in using the term jihad. Now we hear the State Department, under the aegis of Condoleezza Rice, may outlaw the use of the words, jihad and jihadi.

Is this yet another instance of political correctness run amok? That the fear of “offending” Muslims in general trumps our right to defend ourselves against a sworn and very dangerous enemy, the extremists who have very vocally declared a Holy War, or jihad, against us? Why the sudden turnaround in banning the word, jihad?

There are those who say, “Well, if you didn’t go into Iraq, there wouldn’t be terrorists there.” They weren’t some place drinking tea and playing Scrabble. These are hardened jihadists who will fight us some place. And if they want to fight us in Iraq, where we are 140,000 strong, better there than in New York City again. The State Department and Condoleezza Rice are the diplomatic arm of the Bush administration. Its mission, to “win” the hearts and minds of all plus-billion Muslims across the globe so that they “like us”, they “really, really like us” and thus choose to not blow us up. This is operating from a position of appeasement. Appeasement signals weakness, which plays into the hands of our enemies.

Bush’s State Department is losing the War on Terror and no amount of removing certain words from their vocabulary will replace their policy of political correctness, weakness and appeasement. Bush’s term is almost up, it’s too late to replace Condoleezza Rice and her cohorts. We doubt the next administration has the heart to turn the State Department around and make the changes necessary to defeat our enemies. What we do see is defeatism within our government, one word at a time.
